Dump in a new load of tranny fluid combined with a bag of sawdust and sell it before anyone notices.

Suggestions on the problem don't mean jack until you get that CEL diagnosed.

    That should be done immediately.

    VAG COM onry

Sorry you are having issues with a VAG (VW Audi Group) vehicle, and especially the transmission. I am VAG enthusiast myself so I may be able to help. A normal scan from an autozone or advanced will only take you so far. The OBDII reading is generic and won't pinpoint the issue. A real scan from a VAG COM is what will tell you the exact issue with these German vehciles. Some people have them besides dealers, look in your area by using Vwvortex.com. But for starters go ahead and get it scanned at an autozone or advanced auto. if you get a code that reads something like "TCM and ECM are not communicating" than it could be an easy fix. That type of code can be intermittent; not happening all the time. If the TCM (Transmission Control Module) and ECM (Engine Control Module) are not communicating, it can be a fuse (in normal fuse panel) or a relay under the hood. Get it checked out and post results.

Some have timing belts, others have chains; My VR6 has a chain and some 1.8T were made with chains as well.
