It was 'ninja changed' because it was a mistranslation to begin with....maybe that's why it seems only certain player bases were the ones royally pissed off with the augmentation system after they realized they couldn't augment their dream piece of equipment.

There was a similar ninja change in patch notes when they adjusted Archaic Mirrors a couple years ago. The notes said that turning them in would give more IS, and then we went out and did it and got less, then checked again and the wording had changed.

Sure it sucked because it's not what we were expecting, but in the grand scheme of things it wasn't a big deal, not really much different than if they'd worded it properly in the first place, likewise with the augment thing in my view. (Sure, I was hoping I could put DEX+4 on my NQ snipers and save myself a few million gil, but to me the fact that I can't doesn't have a notable effect on my overall enjoyment of FFXI. Not saying it shouldn't for you though, to each his own.)

The token thing is an entirely different animal, though. Sure, it doesn't make any sense why they would say one thing and do another, but in terms of the actual value of the token, the way it was said to work and the way it actually works are effectively the same in terms of account security. Is someone who keylogged your POL ID, password, SE ID and SE password even going to be more likely to bother attempting to access your account when it's a 30min (or even 60min) duration with 5 attempts every 15min and an email notification, than they would if it was the above but with a 30sec expiration? To me it seems the difference is so minute for what it's used for.

If anything, it seems like this change is more convenient than otherwise. I don't know the technology, the rate at which the internal clock of my token migrates away from being synchronized with the internal clock at SE's end, but if this allows more time for me to simply use it as intended without having to get it resynchronized or (more likely) purchase a new one, and without diminishing the added security on my account, all the better in my view. There are other situations where it'll probably be more convenient this way, too. For instance, I never share my account with anyone, but some people in my LS do, and in the past we've had situations where someone who needs one more win for next Odin gets called into work just before we do that run, so they text a friend or AIM them to have them 2box them in for the win. With 30min expiration, they can just include a one-time code along with the message, whereas with a 30sec expiration it probably wouldn't last long enough. Of course they are obviously reducing the security on their account still by sharing it with someone, but they are still pretty well protected against attacks by unknown people and RMT, I would think.
