Well when you're literally born into a pile of trash, I would expect their life expectancy to be 0. I would expect to not see people living in these areas because they're fucking dead as infants. I would expect that mothers die damn near immediately after giving birth in a place like that due to rampant infection, and then for that to spread because now you have rotting bodies in there with everything else. I would think this problem would essentially solve itself by killing everyone off in very short order; not that their life expectancy is 20 years or some shit. That's what amazes me.

How many dead bodies did you see in those pictures? It looks to me they are living in a literal dump and not something, like you describe, where they can't separate dead bodies from normal garbage. Also, the plain fact about childbirth is that infant mortality rate is much much much higher than other developed countries, oh say the US, and many mothers do actually die from, what we might consider simple, complications of childbirth. When you have as many people as India has (I don't even remember is it over a billion) there are bound to be some who manage to scrape a living out of their condition, and that is what is photographed.
