The social interactions in an MMO are different from the social interaction in PnP. In an MMO what you say and do will have absolutely no effect on the world (except in very limited events). In PnP, your actions create a constantly changing setting.

I'm not exactly sure you can call it challenging, but PnP games (at least with dice and combat/skill systems) require just as much skill as FFXI. I've played with a lot of gamers, and I can tell you flat out, no matter how obvious the rules seem, building optimal characters is not always intuitive. It is really the same in FFXI, while a good portion of the populace realizes very easily how to effectively build/gear a character, some just have no fucking clue. Character building, and taking optimal tactical decisions during combat are exactly the same for both rpgs. Only difference is in FF or any computer game, reflexes and quickness of thought/action also play a part.

Either way, what is important is not whether it is hard or not (the DM/GM can always make things harder), it's whether or not the players are having fun. As a DM it is always important to keep this ahead of other conditions. Sometimes this means cranking up the difficulty, other times it means taking it easy and letting them recoup.
