Finance question / Military / Halp

Hey guys. There's a good chance I'm going to quit my job soon to join the air force. The thing is I don't know what to with my truck when I ship off. I owe 3 years out of 6 left on my loan and have no use for it while I'll be gone. Let alone couldn't afford the payment on a recruits salary. Any ideas on how to get out from under the loan? Thanks. 06' Nismo Nissan Frontier king cab if anyone's wondering.

your best bet is to find someone who will pay the ten day pay off for the truck unfortunately.

Can't you just sell it and pay off the loan? I'm confused. You might have to cough up a bit of your own money if you are upside down on the loan, but otherwise...what am I missing here?

How could you not make enough money as a recruit? The military clothes, feeds, and shelters you? What else do you need to spend your salary on? I understand going out on the town but what the hell?

They charge you for a lot of the required junk, and they dont pay much while you are in training.

My ex boyfriend left his car with my brother to drive while he was at Basic training and taking his classes, then he had it shipped out to where he was based.

Hmmmm, i am pretty sure you made just enough to pay the loan as recruit rank. You won't be able to spend your money on anything during bootcamp and AIT anyway.

    Incoming military babble.

I would leave it at home with the parentals if I were you while at Basic, and your school(s). You can talk with your recruiter to see if there are options as far as personal vehicles at your schools, depending on how long you'll be at the school. Short schools normally don't allow you to bring your PoV with you, but if you're there for 6+ months, most have a policy as far as earning rights to drive your shit wherever you go. Make sure you get base tags on your stuff. As far as shipping goes.... while you can indeed ship your truck to wherever you get stationed, if you're going overseas, it is usually cheaper to purchase a vehicle there.

Also, since you're going Chair Force (sorry, career sailor here), Navy Federal Credit Union has excellent programs for loans and payments, and are very nice people to keep in contact with. NFCU just, within the past 6 months or so, opened its services to include Army, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard.

If you're paying with credit now, you can get all interest rates lowered to 6%, assuming you provide your admin people with the correct info such as type of card and previous interest rate. They'll get you a stamped letter which you then send off to the card companies, and you can kiss your 19% rate goodbye. This personally bailed me out of a ton of bullshit (stupid college days), as well as countless airmen, soldiers, marines and sailors. WARNING: only works for rates you had BEFORE you joined. If you sign up for something stupid afterwards, you just fucked yourself, congrats.

If you're keeping it, it depends on what you go into the service to do, as well as your previous experiences. College will grant you extra rank depending on how far, as well as recruiting others to join with you, and a ton of other shit. If your recruiter doesn't mention it to you, pester him or someone else in that office, because they're not there to help you out as much as they can; they're there to get a fucking quota, so they can get advanced. It sounds like bullshit, but I can probably name off 40 people in about 30 seconds who were fucked by their recruiters. I personally went in as an E-3, since as I had college, got a few others to join, and because of what I initially chose to do as my job when I entered.

You have any more questions, holler at your recruiter, or drop me a PM, I don't mind digging up information for people interested in serving.

Fuck, forgot one more thing. as an Airman recruit (I think that's E-1 for you guys), you'll probably make less than what you make now. I suggest you get on moving up by doing those things I mentioned. I was making 300 dollars more than most of the people I graduated with. If you speak other languages, FUCKING TELL THEM. A guy I work with now is from africa. 600 extra a month. Just like that.
