Modding a PSP

I'm not sure if this belonged in the tech or the gaming so with that said,

All I need to get is a Pandora's Battery and a Magic Stick duo right?

I'm thinking of getting this

Anyway, how much do emulators and PSP run memory wise? I'm debating on how big I want because I kind of want it to play PS1 games and some dissidia ;o.

Are those two things all I need or will I need a cord to connect the psp to my pc?

You'll need a USB cable to connect your PSP to your PC, but these are easy to come by.

I personally found someone on craigslist who offered a service to mod my PSP for $15 and just let him do it... I've modded stuff in the past but right now I don't have the time and I didn't feel like buying a bunch of stuff for a one-time operation.

1 year later it still works fine. This might be a path to look into.

If you have the right kind of PSP you should be able to put everything you need on the Memstick then use the Pandora to boot in service then flash the Firmware using instructions provided in those threads or available online.

It can be that easy or stupidly complicated depending on if Murphy's Law shows up.

The stuff you buy/make is hardly one-time. It's great to have a pandora's battery around, because you know that if you happen to brick your psp, it's not a problem at all cause you can just unbrick it. Ideally, it's something that you should hope to never have to use again, but if you ever get in a situation where you might need to... (Honestly, you have to be pretty damn stupid to brick a psp lol, but I still keep my pandora's around anyway. It's great if I ever need to mod a friend's psp, or if for some reason my other battery runs out of juice and i'm on a plane or something, can just boot up the pandora's as a normal battery for 1.65x the duration)

The MS you're going to need for games anyway soo...

Person that asked: PSX games depend on how big the ISO is, since psx are cd games, they will all be <700MB each, less if the game is smaller, it's easy to compress.

Stuff like snes, gba, it's just the size of the rom, so really small.

Also, you don't NEED a usb if you just use a memory card reader to transfer your files.

Memory Card reader is recommended, transferring via USB is dog-slow for PSP I find.

I think there's two ways to make one, one way it's just a battery whose only purpose is pandoraing, the other you can have certain files on your MS that will allow it to start up as a regular battery.

The latter I know can be charged, first one I'd assume it could be as well?

You can charge your pandoras battery but it will take you to the setup screen for your CFW everytime when its plugged in so you cant really use it for anything. The only use of a pandora battery is to put the CFW on your PSP. You should use a regular battery for regular use after you get your PSP all set up with the CFW you downloaded and installed.

As far as games go, you need only download the ISO files for PSP games when you want to play PSP games. You will have to find the converted versions of PS1 games for PSP which isnt too hard if you go via mininova.org. You will have to find the popsloaders for your psp also and have them on your memstick. When playing a PS1 game you will have to find the correct popsloader for that game, not all PS1 games work flawlessly on PSP either. FF7 works perfectly but FF8 freezes when drawing magic most of the time. Theres no emulator needed to play the PS1 games, just the popsloaders. You will need to find the table that shows which popsloaders work the best with whatever game you intend on downloading though.

I bought a Pandora battery from dealextreme.com and it was just the pandora-ing, not chargeable. If you mod a real battery that seems like a bit of a waste to me, since the pandoras are pretty cheap.

(Insert disclaimer here about the reason I modded my PSP being to save on battery life so I could play from memory card instead of UMD, I still buy my games.)

Eh, I actually hard modded my battery myself, does the deed. As far as it not being chargable, it is. Its just the fact that you have to keep the damn thing plugged in to the wall to make it work :/

My pandora's battery acts as a regular battery when I boot it up with the MS containing some files in it, and is chargeable

I just made one myself using the battery that came with my PSP slim, then use a pencil to trace the line back to use as a regular battery. Free, and pretty easy, just have to be careful opening the battery.

PSP Slim people need to hardmod it.

PSP Fatty can software mod it.
