Again, you make it sound like SE would literally take over this site if it were to become a "Premiere Community Site". As Pikko can attest to, that is certainly not the case, and I can't see it happening for any site. I don't really see anything that would stop the Tajs, the Kaekos, the Rukenshins, the Saths, and the Kirschys of the world from posting on FFXIclopedia or Stratics or Allakhazam. I can't see any basis for that fear, and there is very little evidence of that fear becoming true if BG became a premiere site.

I occasionally post on Alla and (very rarely) wiki forums if something piques my interest. Some of Alla's job forums (definitely not all of them though) have a number of high quality posters. The SMN forum is a good example imo. There is good information on Alla forums, you just have to know how to, and be willing to find it. BG can be like that too, but there's a lot more meat on BG.

Purely from an information standpoint, BG is where you need to be to maximize your chances of getting good endgame information. My understanding of the game has increased greatly through these forums and the networking I've accomplished due to BG. For example, if I have a retarded idea about BLU, I can just PM Suiram and get a perfect response about how good or stupid the idea is within 24 hours. Just the other day someone on Standard found you can get a 0% interrupt rate with right gear combos... very cool stuff.

Sono and the other mods on BG provide a very good atmosphere for people like me. A personal example is when I started my enmity testing, Ashira posted it and while there were a lot of 'omgyourethebest' comments (which I appreciate), there were many willing understand what I did, help, and most importantly find holes in it. I later found that someone had posted it on Alla forums and it immediately degraded into a "Taj will make a windower plugin over this and FFXI will be no fun anymore" debate. Someone that read it on Alla even found my PM and personally asked me to stop my testing 'for the good of FFXI'. I think the 2 varied responses just show the differences in the culture of each forum.

Pikko and company do run a great FFXI forum though. It's really a forum built for the casual player, something BG is clearly not. If you want well-established info, I don't suggest it over BG, but it doesn't mean it's inferior - just different. Not everyone that plays FFXI cares for technical stuff like fTP, volatile enmity, 320/120, or how to 6 man Jorm. Stuff like cute Moogle Bento pics, stories of how their EXP PT killed Aquarius, and reposting "A Little FFXI Story" every month does it for a lot of players (no sarcasm). They pay $15 a month just like everyone else it's not my place to tell that what's fun to them. In fact, I'm fairly certain people like me that have to have a graphing calculator next to them when they play FFXI are in the severe minority.

As far as BG becoming a Premier Site, I personally think BG forums loses some of its charm in becoming linked to SE. That's just me though. The correct answer to this is whatever the actual people in BG want - people forget this is actually a forum for a Bahamut LS...

To be honest, if SE doesn't want to get offended, take a good look into the final "Consolidated/BS-Free" Q&A in Bercus's Interview forums. I feel that is a relatively good representation of the BG community without all of the random rant/rage that we go through before the resulting info that blossoms/sinks from it. I feel it will be a good place to start if they ever decides to read BG.

I used to read all the various forums and some LJs. At some point in the summer of 2005 I got linked to BG and started reading, about a half year later started posting, and by a half year after that I had pretty much stopped reading any of the other forums. The same reason then still holds true now: anything interesting that appears on another forum gets reposted here, and a good bulk of it actually originated here anyway (it's funny sometimes to see a quote of a repost of a reference to an event that was first posted in detail as it happened on these forums). Even if the premier sites got a dev interview every day, I'd still probably stick to BG just because the knowledgeable players here can tell you more than SE can or will, and as I said, anything interesting or useful from elsewhere tends to make its way here pretty quickly as it is.

I do agree that "Advanced" isn't always the best forums for FFXI info, though. For over a year it's followed a pretty predictable pattern: Version update > Info about changes from the version update > One huge 70+ page thread > a handful of lame drama threads > Version update preview discussion > Version update > repeat. But Standard and Event sections are chock full of useful info if you just read everything, and even the threads in this section do occasionally derail into something interesting.

Like most people have said, BG is BG because it's not a premiere site. There's absolutely no official connection to SE here except for the little account they apparently rarely even use. It's not BG's place to be a premiere site, that's already covered by the other premiere sites like Alla and Stratics. No one (except perhaps Sono, and rarely) has to wring his hands wondering if SE is going to swoop in and start demanding shit due to the content of a post. There has to be somewhere that is completely free of SE's hand - even if they don't do any real dominating from the shadows, the threat would still be there looming, and it would change things. If BG isn't going to be the 'free' place, people would just go somewhere else to post the kind of shit that gets posted around here.

I would just have one suggestion to the admins here if they are considering going Premiere... make sure you get something you want out of the deal. You guys aren't retarded so I won't go into the whole, "get it in writing" spiel. But... get it in writing. Another site will pop up for people to complain freely without reproach (other than from amongst themselves), so you've gotta figure that though the community will be losing a significant portion of it's not-so-useless freedom to complain, things will bounce back. It's the corporate equivalent of selling out though... make sure it makes you rich, bitch, because there's no turning back.
