I can't get the third party windower working so I'm trying to find another option. Only thing I can think of is installing the game a second time, into a different directory then running both of them on the POL windower. Would that work?

Why doesn't it work? Directx failing? If so, I don't think a second install would help either.
You want to use the third party Windower if you're going to be dual-boxing on the same machine. As the previous poster asked, why isn't it working?
I'm not sure why it's not working. But when I use a third party windower, the game periodically freezes when I switch to a different window.
I meant that I would install the game twice and then run both on game's sanctioned window mode. That wouldn't work?
Whats your setup? Also what version of windower? Your literally better off figuring out & fixing windower instead of doing a double install of FFXI and using the horrible official windowmode.
I'm not sure what version of windower. I have a HP laptop, Intel Duo Core 2.4 ghz with 6 gigs of DDR2 Ram, Nvidia GeForce 9600, running Windows Vista 64 bit.
So the double install + two official window modes, even if it doesn't run all that well, that idea will at least work?
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. But the reason why its not even a viable option is because you will gain nothing but performance losses by doing that method (as FFXI is not truly running in dual-windowed pseudo mode, or at least thats how it was explained to me on vent).
Anyways, you should attempt this with Windower lite, to see if its a consolidated issue with Windower or maybe something else setting-wise elsewhere on the PC.

Also, do you use any programs that skin your windows? If this is the case, I had a friend that his PC would lock up or FFXI in the windows would freeze because he was using the vista-aero skin with Windower due to transparency lag & overlays crashing for some reason. Not sure if this is the same issue though but its worth a try to disable skins for this specific application in properties of POL/Windower launch.
(Note: I'm on XP, but its literally the same thing on Vista, etc.)

One thing to add, here are also some resources on current glitches/problems/issues with the unofficial windower. Always worth skimming over in case I missed something.

I've never tried windows lite. I'll give it a try, thanks. And as it turns out my dual install idea won't work either. When I tried to install a second PlayOnline client, it asked me to delete all previous POL/FFXI files. So guess that's no go.
Still no go. Windower continues to freeze at some point, usually after minimizing the window multiple times. I have to force it to close via Task Manager and then relog.
