I'm glad to see it's just in America. I was worried Canada would get hit.
crap, a large city in Mexico is not but 1 four lane interstate and a crappy fence distance form my university![]()
^close 2nd for having my idol, dime, in your sig.
As said before, no reason to freak out. At worst we'll all be forced to take a shot. Just keep your hands washed and don't take a shit in a public toilet.
Flu outbreaks are no joke though. The Spanish Flu (was bird flu, not swine flu, but close enough for me) killed at least 20,000,000 people in 1918, and may have killed as many as 100,000,000 worldwide. In the US alone, something like 600,000 people died, and a quarter of the population got the virus.
We are certainly prone to sensationalize everything these days. NBC evening news dedicated the first ten minutes of it's half hour program to this last night. But if this turns out to be as serious as that outbreak, we're all going to feel stupid for being so dismissive.
Normally I'm the first to poke fun at the crisis of the week people. But what scares me about this is the absolute proof that we're completely powerless to stop a pandemic. Two days ago there were a few lines about an outbreak in Mexico City. Then yesterday it was in NYC, Kansas, and other parts of the US. In this morning's Washington Post, they're reporting suspected cases in New Zealand. That's a global spread in two days.
This may turn out to be just a mild strain. But if it were a bad one, or heaven forbid an even worse disease- well, kiss your asses goodbye.
Score one for American health care. (At least we can say it's better than Mexico's)So far, there have been at least 11 confirmed cases of swine flu in California, Texas and Kansas. Patients have ranged in age from 9 to over 50. At least two were hospitalized. All recovered or are recovering.
Sucks that it seemingly started in Mexico during spring vacation. Thus, of course it will end up everywhere. Very nice planning you damn dirty swine.
Most flus and viral infections are passed not only by droplet vector as well, i.e. people coughing/sneezing and other people inhaling the coughed/sneezed droplets, but also contact transmission with light switches, a box of kleenex, doorknobs, computer keyboards, anything someone touches can become a fomite.
Please, watch there be a lack of vaccines available (even though they can make vaccines in a relatively short time).
As long as it's not Captain Trips!

If you haven't already started carrying one of these around, nows the time.
I did a microbiological experiment on Purell hand sanitizer and it really doesn't kill anything that could potentially be pathological. It's just 20% Ethyl Alchohol. Mixed with gel shit so that it evaporates.
St Francis high school in Queens is closed down for now. BYE BYE ICE HOCKEY RIVALS.
