I think it's ridiculous that they're throwing the term around the US as if it has become a severe outbreak yet.

There has been, what, almost 20-30 documented cases in the US? That's about a millionth of the population.

I just found out that this guy that I work with probably has the Swine flu. He was sick all last week after going to South Padre Island, Texas/Matamoros, Mexico. The dumb fuck came into work on Thursday, and was still sick, he was even in my office touching my files! How he called in saying that he might be quarantined. He still sick, and now his entire family is sick.

Even if the outbreak isn't severe yet, prevention is still better than cure, right?

I too see the media being a bit hyped up about it. I mean, just look at the LHC :/

Seems like on CNN they are saying the new 20 cases are comming from the St. Francis High School, 20 more of the kids have the flu now (I'm pretty sure there will be more from that school too, since they reported from the weekend that 70+ felt ill).

My workplace's resident hypochondriac already thinks he has the swine flu. Too bad he used up all his FMLA time on the "horrible, horrible cold" (aka addiction to pain meds) that kept him home all of last week.

I'm personally not worried, this kinda pandemic always hits the healthy young adults (see: Spanish Flu). For once my HIV will come in handy, motherfuckers!

If I recall correctly, the influenza pandemic in the early 20th century actually started around this time (Spring), but it didn't amount to much until around October of that year when the weather cooled down.

Then the shit hit the fan.

Also, yes the swine flu is airborne and contagious. Symptons are similar to the regular flu, just more severe. Death is possible.

My brother just brought up a good point when I talked to him about this. 36,000 Americans die from lnfluenza-related illnesses a year. So all this panic over swine flu seems superfluous (sp?) when compared to how many people die from an illness we've known for years. I guess it's just people being afraid of the unknown. While I'm at it, get your flu shots!

Must I remind you that there is NO vaccine for this flu. There is always a vaccine for the regular flu each year. This flu is fairly new (it broke out in 1970s but wasn't strand as it is today and only like 1 person got it that time). Also, the people who are beginning to show up in statistics as "cases" just started happening on Friday nightish.

With no known vaccine for it yet (vaccines can take months, especially if the virus mutates, will force lab workers to start from square one) this may be the next big thing...If it mutates again too, it might mutate into a more severe form of the flu.
Wikipedia has already updated their database and is keeping up w/ the news, so i recommend ya'll check dis out: 2009 swine flu outbreak - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yeah I heard bout that 5.6 Magnitude Earthquake, on CNN they were saying how ppl in hospitals were yelling "APOCALYPSE" in Spanish because of all the events happening at the same time etc.
