Must I remind you that there is NO vaccine for this flu. There is always a vaccine for the regular flu each year. This flu is fairly new (it broke out in 1970s but wasn't strand as it is today and only like 1 person got it that time). Also, the people who are beginning to show up in statistics as "cases" just started happening on Friday nightish.

With no known vaccine for it yet (vaccines can take months, especially if the virus mutates, will force lab workers to start from square one) this may be the next big thing...If it mutates again too, it might mutate into a more severe form of the flu.

There are already anti-viral drugs to deal with swine flu. If it ends up spreading out across America they'll likely quarantine areas and keep kids out of school until it subsides, but it's not exactly the kind of epidemic you'd see in Hollywood. I doubt many people will die from it in America, and the people that do will be the hillbilly type that "don't go to no hospitul".

You realize that flu vaccines are manufactured with several strains of influenza inside the inoculation medium, and that they usually stockpile different batches that contain appropriate strains that are predicted to manifest, right?

In other words, chances are pretty good that the swine flu is part of recently produced vaccines and that this will not affect us at all. The worry is really about how it will affect the rest of the world and that is why it is so critical that they start producing more vaccines now. It takes about 5-6 months to manufacture enough just for our country (and not everyone takes it, doubly so since they discovered mercury is part of some flu shots).

Even though the current strain of swine flu isn't part of vaccines, they do have stockpiles of past strains that *may* work to prevent death from the disease. Unfortunately, they have no vaccines that can prevent being infected.

It's not nearly as much of an emergency as they're hyping. It's more of an emergency in the sense that it's not a problem NOW but it could be in 5-6 months when peak viral season begins.

Just found out that three of the first confirmed cases of swine flu in Ontario are in people in Port Perry, Ontario where I'm doing my placement for the Port Perry newspaper. It seems I'm once again face to face with a possible flu pandemic in my own backyard (see my previous post on page two for my dealings with SARS and bird flu).

I just found out that this guy that I work with probably has the Swine flu. He was sick all last week after going to South Padre Island, Texas/Matamoros, Mexico. The dumb fuck came into work on Thursday, and was still sick, he was even in my office touching my flies! How he called in saying that he might be quarantined. He still sick, and now his entire family is sick.
