I don't know about you, but I hate vomiting and having diarrhea, and now I hear that the "Severe" cases that are causing death are as a result of Pneumonia, which is something I've never had before.

All I know is that Pneumonia a respiratory condition that my Aunt had once where she had to stay at the hospital overnight, and they showed an X-Ray of her lungs being filled with something (she doesn't even smoke she got it some how I forget). I cant imagine hospitals being able to take care of an overflow of patients who ALL have pneumonia as a result of having the "Severe" case of H1N1.

Can't speak for the 3rd world countries, but as along as we keep on top of it and get it checked out early, the tilaflu things they keep mentioning will lessen our symptons and we'll recover "ok" (as far as we know it, for now)

First confirmed case of swine flu just popped up today in Reno. A 2 year old girl has it, was not hospitalized and is recovering at home. Another family member is sick... it has arrived in my area.

On a side note how is this more dangerous than the regular flu?

Aside from there being no vaccine yet (for atleast 6 months), there is a possibility of ppl w/ superb immunities succumbing to the severe version of this virus, if it mutates and becomes like the cases that are causing deaths in Mexico. The Severe cases are severe because they cause Pneumonia and ppl are dying from Pneumonia.

It's the same strain in Mexico as in the US. It hasn't mutated...

From what I understand it doesn't cause pnumonia it causes a cytokine storm in your body.

Cytokine storm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a common problem in healthy adults during a pandemic outbreak of a disease that would not normally be fatal. It happened during the 1918 flu outbreak and was the cause of many deaths.

Basically this storm happens in your lungs which slowly fills them with fluids and you drown.

The amount of people with next to no comprehension of diseases or even a high school level of physiology education trying to talk about these areas is making my head hurt.

Bird Flu, SARS, etc... These diseases come about every so often and are placed on pandemic levels for preventative and cautious measures. This is not 28 days later. You will be fine.

Both cause fluid to collect in the lungs but they are still vastly different things. Reading articles on it and watching the news they have not said that swine flu causes pneumonia.

Symptom of a disease is not the same thing as the disease. Fluid filled lungs is a symptom, it is not pneumonia.

Holy shit we're all gonna die, I remember when that SARS virus rampaged through us and killed those countless millions. The horror of walking through a town only filled with shells of what used to be homes and dead bodies with vultures pecking at the flesh, themselves lying dead steps away from bodies picked clean.

Oh wait, that didnt happen. Mexico is a dive, a hellhole on the face of the world like that stain in your toilet where you took a shit but it lingers there taunting you to clean it.

Really rolling my eyes that people are freaking out this hard. Besides lacking an immediate vaccine for this (which is a legitimate concern for the elderly, newborns, and those with serious immunity issues), has Pig Pox proven to be any more dangerous than more standard versions of the flu? The news seems to not be covering this quite so hard today, so I wonder if most of the hype is over.

Coming in to lighten the mood a bit:

On a more serious note, got an alumni mailing from my high school in Dallas. Said the UIL (organization that runs the majority of high school events sporting & academic) that all games/events are canceled until May 11. Also, all schools in the Ft. Worth area are closed until May 8th I believe from what some friends have been telling me.

    Just nuts.

My girlfriend grew up in HK and was in high school when the SARS shit came. They canceled the entire last month and half of school. Her vacation started reaaal early that year.

In total, almost 300 people died from SARS during the scare. Hong Kong is 8mil people strong on an area 1/4 the size of nyc. Only 300 casualties over such an immense scare. The scare certainly made people be careful, but as far as the world, far more dispersed than HK, being seemingly as scared, is just silly.

Panic all you wish, your panic will not cure you, our fear will not heal us. What will happen will happen. Wash your hands, take your vitamins, drink water, get rest and hope for the best. Seriously tho, wouldnt a slight decrease in the world population, especially in countries lacking health care, sanitation, government, money and jobs.. oh.. sounds like the U.S.A. nvm...

Pneumonia is a swelling of the lung tissue that usually causes fluid to accumulate in the lungs, it really depends on the pneumonia. It could be mucus or just fluid. Generally if untreated the person drowns.

Its terrible and all, but I find it kind of funny how the Texas gvmt is begging the CDC for help now when they were threatening secession just a few days ago. lol.
