The impact of technology on social networking

The reason for this page is to look at the impact of technology on
networking. This includes things like Facebook, Myspace, game
forums, and dating websites. We are also looking at how technology
can not only bring people together from the same continent, but
also from other continents and overseas. We ask you to please reply
to this forum with just your state if you a US citizen, or with
your country if you are a not a US citizen.

Thank you, REC 460, Ohio University

Actually not being lazy, this is the whole purpose of this project. This same article has been posted on social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, and dating sites like it said in the original text. I was just asked to post in gaming forums. Many recreational professionals feel that technology is a downfall of our youth, our project is to prove that technology has its uses in the field. Our feeling is that technology is a very useful recreation tool (outside of gaming as another group is looking into the field of gaming, tv, and other electronics). We want to prove that with technology ever developing that it will increase social relationships not with just people in same area, but with people 100's and 1000's of miles apart.

No, we are just asking that people make a reply to this thread with there state (if US) or there Country (if non US). One of my fellow members is in the process of making a poll, however it still has to be approved by the IRB board and Human Relations board since we are questioning people. We are just making these type of posts in case the IRB board doesn't get back to us in time.

Also, if all you're looking for is people's location, it would just be easier to go by their location. Many people state their actual location on the board some put Vana'diel or other fake places, but for the most part people accurately say where they're from...

True, however the idea is the networking from distances. Therefor we need to be able to show the forum with people responding to the tread. Just because someone makes a profile on here doesn't mean they always will talk to people, this will skew the results. By having people physically posting there location we are able to validate our findings because it shows networking in the truest forms.

Sorry if this seems rude but.. I don't understand.
You need data to prove that, using the power of the internet, people can and do network with others from all over the globe. Um... isn't that like... a given? People are wondering about this at a university level?

No worries Shade. Yes is is kind of a given, however one major concern within the recreation field is that technology is a huge hindrance to the development of personalities and health. Kids these days are spending hours after hours indoors rather then outdoors. This leads to such things as Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD), and the Fear of The Boogeyman. We are trying to prove that with this type of technology people are able to network with other types of people. This can be playing games online like FFXI, WoW, ect. We want to see people from all over using technology together such as in this forum. Already we have some NA participants and England participants. This shows people working together and possibly learning more about the different cultures of others.

I'm not helping you. Matter of fact, I'm emailing your professor to complain about your abuse of social networks on the interwebs to further your...

    Oh, wait, wrong thread.

    London, UK.

"This shows people working together and possibly learning more about the different cultures of others" is a leap of judgement that I'd advise against making. Sure, people will pool information on AV strats and what-have-you, but that's just because they want gear. Given the general poor state of the Advanced Sharks, I wouldn't say there's much real "work" being done. Additionally, the cultural paradigms of most of North America and Western Europe are so similar that it's hardly groundbreaking cultural exchange. It would also be in your best interests to at least attempt to eliminate your confirmation bias by not jumping to conclusions based on what at this point is almost zero evidence.
