You didn't put a stop to it. The amount of participants was significant, and a large number of them read through the entire thread. They obviously remember the majority of the content. All you've done is aggravate them.

What you do here is significant. BG is a large, popular, complicated and expensive place to moderate. Yet moderation through deletion on a subject so proliferous is one of the most nonsensical, short-sighted, bandaid-style things I've ever seen you do. Do you call the shots? Certainly, but that doesn't mean you'll do so without criticism, and this was a waste of a move.

It isn't a solution, and as the thread implies, the discussion isn't over. I would consider a temporary banning of the person responsible more viable, but this sort of response will simply add fuel to the fires of conspiracy theories, and so on, so forth.

In short, I believe you must have made the cheapest and most boneheaded knee-jerk reaction possible.
