    PC to TV question

im trying to find a cheaper solution to watching some of my anime movies/youtube/hulu videos on my PC to my hi def TV with full resolution w/o having to use 7 feet HDMI cables and drilling holes in the wall. So far the only thing i can find is through a wireless media center, but i heard the quality of videos is terrible. Does anyone know a better solution? or should i just stick it out and go to monoprice and buy those HDMI cables?

In my experience, the wireless stuff is garbage.(BBY and CC manager) Just cave and buy the HDMI cable. It will be well worth your time and money.

I don't know the words to look for when searching for my problem so I'll ask here. Like Richardd I'm trying to do the same thing, only I'm having some problems with the audio part.

My setup consists of a monitor and an HDTV. My video card is a GeForce GTX260. HDTV is a Sony Bravia, forgot the model. Here is a quick shot of the trio.

Currently, the monitor is connected via DVI and the HDTV is connected via DVI-HDMI. I want to have sound coming from the HDTV since I don't have computer speakers. What I am doing now is using an AV adapter to plug into the sound ports of my computer and using composite cables to connect that to the back of my TV. By the way, I have no sound card, just using the motherboard's.

Here is a shot of the back of my HDTV, the important part anyway.

HDMI-1 is being used by my PS3 at the moment. HMDI-2 will be for the comp.

Here is the adapter I'm using for the sound.

    Here's the ass.

For some reason, the sound will come through if the comp's HDMI is unplugged. Maybe it's because of the interference from the HDMI or whatever but it worked before I bought a monitor and used the HDTV as the main monitor.

I'm trying to do a dual setup so I can play games and slap some movies on the big screen at the same time. Because I have no computer speakers or sound system I wanted the audio to come from my HDTV. Sounds more natural that way ya.

I think I'm missing some details but I don't remember what. Oh well.

    Thanks in advance BG!

omg .. what is that horrible adaptor plug ! sounds like when you plugged a new screen into the pc it didn't like it and you haven't ticked a box or changes a setting on the digital audio out maybe (im thinking a realtek setting issue as i had a similar thing when i added more different kinds of screens)

    for me its simple now

    for HD

i use a single hdmi cable for audio and picture - via a radeon gfx card direct into the tv then out into a stereo hifi system (soon to be replaced by 7.1 system)

for normal stuff where i just need more screens (2-3)

i just use an AV splitter box to my 2nd monitor and daisy chain the HD (as i can only run 2 screens from my gfx card ;; )

If so, then that's because your sending your sound signal from the mobo by way of that adapater, and not through the HDMI by way of your video card. Somehow I don't think that's what you're getting at though, as that just sounds way too easy.

Skai I know this is a cop-out (partly because I'm not familiar with the problem you're having... outputting sound to a HDTV) but I think it'd be far easier if you threw down the 80 bucks for a decent pair of Logitech speakers, and letting them handle all the sound from your computer. Since everything is so close together, it wouldn't seem like much of an issue.

One thought though, I know you can choose your sound output device in Vista pretty easily. Have you tried messing with that to see if you can force the output you want?

If you're really against HDMI, there's always this:

USB to HDMI Adapter USB 2.0 Video Card DVI and HDMI Output 1600 x1200

I have no experience with them, just remember seeing it on the market a while back.

I'd just shell out the money and get an HDMI cable though.

Assuming you're using HDMI port 2, get a headphone jack to phono adapter (protip: monoprice is your fwend) and plug into that. That's how I have my set up (I'm using a different TV but the control panel is essentially the same as mine so they're probably the same manufacturer) and it works fine for me.

One of these should do the job: For only $0.54 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 3.5mm Stereo Plug/2 RCA Plug cable - 6ft | 3.5mm/RCA Audio Cables

Edit: Re-read the post because I thought I might have missed a beat, I just want to clarify that I'm advocating that you use your motherboards sound (the green jack will likely be the front left/right speakers) and using the above cable. Sound via graphics cards, especially via DVI > HDMI, is very hit and miss. It doesn't work properly for my system either.

^ Anything that is converting from XXX to HDMI you will be losing quality. HDMI to HDMI is digital and is the proper way to achieve the highest quality.

DVI, VGA and HDMI are all digital. You shouldn't see any quality degradation, unless you run the cable behind a microwave or you run a pirate radio from your living room and you have a radio transmitter somewhere in the loop.

For video, I got a DVI-HDMI cable running from the GPU to the HDTV. For audio, I got a composite cable running from mobo to HDTV via AV adapter (third picture from first post)

When both video and audio is connected, there is no sound. However when only audio is connected, it's fine, but that's not what I want.

Yeah, but don't wanna fork out for some speakers yet. I'll see though, it's an option I thought about before.

Oh yeah, I forgot I'm running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Just realized maybe that's why. I'll try to see if it works when I switch to XP.

Just use a PS3 or Xbox to stream your video via media player 11.

I think VGA is analog, dvi and hdmi are the only digital video signals.

just fyi hdmi carries sound and your laptop probably turns it off when its plugged in just like headphones. this would be why you don't have sound when you use hdmi on your computer.
