Switching back to linux, but having some issues..

I've been having a weird craving to go back to linux from Vista but I've been having problems installing it. If I try to boot from an install CD it tries to load and then immediately boots to windows. I was a bit confused so I tried to boot from a DSL CD but it restarts my PC as soon as it tries to load (IE: I can see the penguin for a split second then my pc reboots.)

If I try to boot it from windows it bluescreens my PC. It works in Virtualbox though...

Do you guys have any idea what the fuck is going on?

Sorry I can't be more detailed because there are no real signs of what is going on. It just reboots.

Specs? and did you install linux on this pc before? I have seen similar things happen before and a bios update fixed the issue.

I had updated my image card bios a day ago but putting the originals back did nothing. I overclocked my card a bit, don't know if that matters.

    any other stats required? D:

edit: I have installed ubuntu on this PC before but formatted my HD some time ago.

I guess what linux did you have installed and what linux are you trying to install?
On my computer, if I have a second monitor plugged in to my Nvidia card on my initial boot to install it will reboot linux.

Try and get to the console as linux boots and post the line where linux crashes, if you can see it. You could also try and install using safe mode or the Alternate installer disk.

Okay, tried unplugging one of my screens which didnt do anything. And I can't get to my console as it boots because it doesnt. It literally boots directly to windows. It goes "Reading from the CD --" then flashes to windows.

try flashing an ubuntu live CD to a flash drive (there's myriad tutorials out there on how to do it, so i won't walk thru the process here.) that will rule out at least some of the hardware.

When it's reading the disc, is it asking you to press any button to boot from the disc? Did you burn the ISO image correctly? Which version of ubuntu are you trying to boot/install? (If it's even ubuntu that is...)

If it's not booting from the disc, try flashing the iso to a usb drive like mentioned above. Use this if you can: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download

btw new ubuntu jaunty jackalope is just pure awesomeness :D

Besides gnome removing the shutdown buttons, so you have to keep the app near the clock

Can't you just click on your username and shutdown from there? Or are you talking about something else?

Well, I got linux to run off the disk but now it wont install on my HD. Not really sure what the problem is. Messing around with some partitions right now. It's worth the effort though, I really did like Linux even through the little annoyances.

Anyway, for some reason Linux would install itself in a 2.5GB partition. I've never noticed but I don't think that's normal. I had no way of changing it and have tried 2-3 times to get this to work correctly. Just jumped to the chase and deleted my old recovery partitions in homes of this shit changing.

Deleting the recovery partitions worked. Finally back on linux. Now to make it look spiffy and install wine, TF2, and be elitist about my OS.
