My cousin went through the same thing. My aunt had an old cable bill through his social from when he was like 11-12. He called and complained and within 2 weeks it was off of his credit. Alll he had to do was show proof his name was different then used. He sent a notarized letter to the crediter aswell as a letter from the original cable company showing his social was used prior to him being 18.

Crediters know that you are 100% not liable for anything purchasd involving your social prior to your 18 birthday. But they are still gonna try to get money out of you.

And yes...they did follow up on my Aunt. All she did was simply say "it was a mistake, I carried both mine and my son's social security cards at that time. I must have used his without thinking". Nothing ever came of it...no court date or anything, She simply had someone from a legal dept. call her.

Well we ordered a copy of her credit report from the 3 reporting agencies. Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.

Once we get those we can file the claim to have the information removed from her credit report.

Is there any way to check, other than these 3 reports, and make sure there is nothing else out there. I'm talking like...bank accounts possibly opened or things like that. I know her mom owned a cleaning business when my g/f was in middle school. Obviously her mom said, "I only did this once, really sorry, etc etc.".... but I'm betting that's a load of bullshit.

We want to be sure of everything, seeing as how she has had immaculate credit for the 7 years I've been with her... and this shit just comes out of the blue. It appeared on a credit report she gets bi-monthly from one of the credit card companies she is with last month, but the fraudulent account was opened sometime prior to 2001.

Every account with her SSN should be on those 3 credit reports, including bank accounts, bills, credit cards, etc.

As long as no new accounts are opened with her SSN without your knowledge, and you clear up any problems currently on the reports, you should be ok.

The salesman pretty much tricked her into buying a car she couldn't afford. She was stupid for falling for his BS, but there's nothing else she can do about it now lol.

...aside from bringing it down to Red Hook and leaving it unlocked overnight.....

But you are not limited by what you do and doing that will not guarantee that the mother will be prosecuted like the company wants you to believe.

If you read what I originally wrote I explain all of this quite clearly.
Nothing in my post was inaccurate, I disagree with the use of a term as dismissive as "scare tactics" in that the threats they are making are not wholly without merit. I also did not say that telling the credit reporting agencies that it was not her debt would end in certain litigation against her mother. My only assertion was that the only way to "protect" her mother from litigation was to pay the debt, which is entirely true. There is no other action she can take that will lessen the chance of her mother being brought up on fraud charges. Bear in mind i nowhere here, or in my other post, stated or implied that any action she took would lead to certain litigation against her mother.

Ok let me explain it carefully for you.

    1) Company A (the company that the girlfriend "owes" money too) wants their money. They do not go after the girlfriend OR the girlfriends mother. The only way they know about this is a ding on her credit.

    2) Girlfriend goes to Company A they use "scare tactics" to get her to just pay without questioning it. They are scare tactics they will do anything they can.

    3) If the girlfriend does nothing chances are the bill will still sit there and Company A will still do nothing about it which is what has been happening.

    4) Girlfriend goes to Credit report agencies and reports a false ding on her credit report. Shows them the name and SS# do not match. Credit report agencies take ding off her credit report after some investigation. Company A has NO KNOWLEDGE of this happening.

    5) All of this does not change anything involving Company A.

In the OP he did not say the collectors were hounding them. They contacted the Collectors. This was the wrong thing to do.

Collectors and Companies will use scare tactics to get you to pay that is their JOB!
I am not saying that what they say is false or inaccurate just by calling them scare tactics. It is the same thing as what the news is doing now, they way they are reporting about swine flu is scare tactics. Even if the information itself is true the way it is said is using it as a way to scare people so they panic and it increases their ratings ect. The information is accurate but the Collectors are going to say it in an untruthful way without giving you the whole story or all your options and this is scare tactics.

Correct, but now i am forced to wonder if, having alerted the collections agency themselves, does that not increase the chance that some action may be taken.

Why would you call just Equifax, and not Experian and TransUnion, too? Doesn't the ding show up on all three?

IIRC if you file a claim with one of them and the ding is removed from your credit report the information is relayed to the other two companies.

I might be mistaken about that. If that is not the case then yes you would want to call all 3 credit report companies.

We called all three companies to get her a current copy of her report. You can't dispute anything until you get a current copy directly from the credit bureau's.

They don't always have the same info pop up, that's why we just went and got all 3. I had a false claim from an Internet company in the midwest on my Equifax report that I had to get fixed, it never appeared on any of the other two.
