Wow, leave it to that Socialist Half-breed Obama to give away a hardworking white American male's job to a Mexican.
The snark in this thread is high-class, like Obama's fetish for dijon mustard.
Anyways yeah.. Obama's Harriet Miers - Ramesh Ponnuru - The Corner on National Review Online This is the most ridiculous shit I've ever seen. Just leaving politics aside for the moment.. Harriet Miers is FAR less experienced and EASILY much less intelligent than Sotomayor. Hell, Miers makes Bush look like a honor roll kid.
And given Sotomayor's collegiate pedigrees - Princeton (graduated summa cum laude) and Yale Law School - the Federalist Society should have absolutely nothing to complain about.
Isn't she Puerto Rican, and not Mexican? Which means Hispanic would be an incorrect term. Latina being the correct one?
Same shit.
Don't jump to conclusions, guys, sooner or later someone is going to dig up her family tree, find a white ancestor and insist she be called whatever fraction of white she is, instead of being latina/chicano/hispanic/brown folk.
Hah!
I think the worst thing about Sotomayor is how we have to pronounce her surname as if it were in Spanish, oh no!
Expect more of this.Putting the emphasis on the final syllable of Sotomayor is unnatural in English (which is why the president stopped doing it after the first time at his press conference), unlike my correspondent's simple preference for a monophthong over a diphthong, and insisting on an unnatural pronunciation is something we shouldn't be giving in to.
That's rather petty nitpicking don't you think?
Good luck to the Republicans. Vote against the first Hispanic supreme court justice at their own perils and run the risk of aliening the fastest growing voting block in the nation. If I were GOP then I would guarantee a swift confirmation so that it won't become a vulnerability in the next election cycle.
I'd say a third or less get this, the rest of the Rush/Newt/Cheney humping crowd doesn't or doesn't care, so it could get pretty terrible. The thing is the GOP is between a rock and a hard place with this cause all the conservative PACs that they rely on to smear their opponents using soft money will not support them in 2010/2012 if they don't vote against/draw out the confirmation battle and they are damned with Hispanics like you mentioned on the flip side.
Oh the lulz to be had.

Yeah... riiight Newt. You've gone and made me do something rash.(in a speech from 2001) ....Judge Sotomayor questioned the famous notion — often invoked by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her retired Supreme Court colleague, Sandra Day O’Connor — that a wise old man and a wise old woman would reach the same conclusion when deciding cases.
“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” said Judge Sotomayor, who is now considered to be near the top of President Obama’s list of potential Supreme Court nominees.
