POPULAR music nowadays sucks.
If you look at things that aren't being played on the radio, however, you'll find amazing gems.
Music of the past was good, yes, but as someone earlier in the thread said, there's tons of groundbreaking music being made, pushing the envelope and making some pretty amazing shit.
This isn't exactly a good example, but take the DJ Girl Talk. He does mash ups. He'll take the drum line from one song, guitar riff from another, the lyrics from another, and form a new song from it.
In fact, he's the only person who actually can make the garbage that's on pop radio tolerable, imo. He's mashed up tons of songs I'd HATE on their own, but when mixed up in the soup, sound awesome.
Obviously, there are more traditional bands out there which are making some amazing shit, like TV on the Radio, MixelPixel, etc.
Ignore radio, look deeper, and you'll be rewarded with spiffy music.
COMMERCIAL RADIO SUCKS
Music is doing just fine, thanks.
There is new music that I like but in regards to popular music today that's played on the radio, yes it sucks. But we don't have to take our clothes off, to have a good time. We can dance and party, all night. And drink some cherry wine. Na na na nanana~
I'd have to agree that most of what's on the radio is the garbage of the music world, but the industry markets to the lowest common denominator amongst it's market.
I listen to a wide variety of music, most of which the best isn't played on the radio. Right now, in terms of quality music, the Metal and Hip Hop (the underground stuff, not the bullshit that's on the radio) movements are still really strong.
yes, yes i do
i'm only 28 and i feel like im out of the loop already when it comes to music
Holy shit @ Rob Base.. that tune brings back some crazy memories of summer camp.
Swisha house and that bullshit ass screwed and chopped Houston bullshit. I see why Charismatic is a bitch now tbh.
Drink more codeine and die already.
Dood Cobra Starship is in no way shape or form punk. They are emopop as far as I'm concerned and I actually know them. Long story short wife's best friend at work her husband is their roadie/sound man. So we've hung out with them multiple times in the past. They even got us in to meet Fallout Boy when they opened for them here in Pittsburgh.
Radio 1's essential mix has some decent bands on display, particularly last years's best essential mix (it was very late last year so it's practically this year), Flying Lotus. Listening to it again today, it's awesome, makes a nice change from the usual electronic music that's floating about at the moment.
Am I the only one who doesn't think the popular music of the 80s was particularly good?
90% of the music on my MP3 player was released 1963 to 1980 - and the newest album on my MP3 player was released by a 65ish year old Paul McCartney.
That said, there was a lot of stuff I liked from the 90s, a lot of one hit wonders too... but for me, nothing really stacks up to the older stuff.
This is pretty much what is in my iPod right now that is considered "new" music.
Apocalyptica
Kings of Leon
Rise Against
Disturbed
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of the Dead
The Mars Volta
Queens of the Stone Age
Nas
Fugazi
Gnarles Barkley
Deftones
Danger Mouse
Gorillaz
I'm sure I've missed some bands but for the most part this is it. It's usually music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's from there on in. Except for the song from the Mercenaries 2 commercial. That's on there too because it fucking rocks and if you haven't heard it, you must track it down immiediately. It's titled "Oh No"
