Shit sucks

Don't really feel the need to defend myself, people are making wild assumptions and accusations that aren't true. Just trying to put my situation out there and see what other people are coping with during this period in time. I'm quite aware how incredibly lucky I am to be in the position I've been in up until now. But I appreciate the responses, good and bad, there's a lot of good advice in here that I'm going to consider carefully. Thanks.

Sorry, I'm not responding to you or the OP, really. Just defending Takedown's attitude against the common American belief recently that things should be handed to people on a silver platter and working for things is for suckers.

I agree with you on that front completely, and I never said that I deserve my education handed to me on a silver platter. I recognize how fortunate I am to have the parents that I do, and recognize not everyone is in the same position. Sanoske is right - for me to pay off my tuition on my own it would require much more than a 40 hour work week and much more than the $8/hour and $9.50/hour jobs on campus I currently have. Add that to a paper-heavy course load, my responsibilities to my residents, and any extracurriculars I want to engage in, and it becomes unreasonable for me to feasibly pay off the mountain of debt I would incur before I turned 50. My parents don't want me in that much debt straight out of school, and I'm absolutely indebted to them for their enormous contribution to my college education. I bust my ass every semester here, and am close to, if not completely, burnt out by the time the semester's at a close. I do work hard, and I merely voiced a concern, a distant second to my hope for my mother's financial success and stability, that what's left of my education would be in jeopardy.

Lost my job in October so they could hire someone to work half the hours that I did. Started an accelerated program for the Medical field in November and should be done by July. Ended up costing around $15,000... Couldn't get any grants or anything because my mom and her husband made too much money in 2007, even though from January-November 2008 when I started school my mother was divorced and we barely made enough to pay for the bills.

Ended up getting a Stafford loan for $5,500 of it, and convinced my dead beat drunk father to take out a loan for the rest, since he had never done anything else for me. School offers career placement after a 160 hour externship. I am ready to be done and finally start making money again. I just recently got my unemployment extended until September 2009, but $175 a week doesn't even pay for my car/insurance.
