Shooters; L/R handed, eye dominance

Was thinking about this at work today.

I'm left handed, and I shoot left handed because my left eye is dominant. My father is left handed, but shoots right handed because he is right eye dominant. I was wondering about the correlation, if there is one.

My right eye is lazy. So bad that the nerves never developed. I am right handed in every way except shooting. So I fire left handed.

How do you tell which eye is your dominant eye? I never really though about it. I shoot right handed and do most things right handed though I shave with right hand for right side of face and left side of face. I also brush my teeth and eat with my left hand.

I also switch hit in pool, baseball, and in my pants.

I was left handed when I was born but my dad hated it so forced me to become right handed and my right eye is slightly worse then my left eye so when I use to go to the gun range I would use my right hand with my left eye.

Left handed right sighted, even though I have a stigmatism in my right eye, this was the way I first shot a gun and I haven't tried anything differently. It's awkward since it means either holding the butt of the gun against the wrong shoulder or cocking my head to one side, but even that feels more natural than using my left eye.

I can use a left handed rifles though. My sister is left handed and shoots left handed so I practiced with her AR just in case.

When I take my pistols out I always practice with both hands and both eyes. Anything less than 50' I can hit but once you get over that I have to go to my right hand.

How do you tell which eye is your dominant eye?

Hold either hand at arm's length and give a thumbs up sign. Focus on a point much farther beyond your thumb, so that you see two thumbs(think Magic Eye). Be looking through whichever thumb is the most comfortable for you to look through, and then close first one eye and then the other. When the thumb you aren't looking through disappears, the eye you are looking through is your dominant eye.

This doesn't seem to be working for me. When I switch between eyes my thumb just moves back and forth. And if I pick a thumb to look through then I accidentally focus on it and lose the double vision. My mind is blown...

Another way you can do it is to make an open square between your two first fingers and thumbs (holding your hands flat). You angle your hands slightly and make a hole you can look through. Then hold that at arm's length, focus on something through the hole, and bring your hands to your face. You shouldn't concentrate on the hands, just let them come naturally to your face. Whatever eye you end up looking though the hole is is your dominant eye.

I'm an archer rather than a gun-totin' badarse, and have an astigmatism in my right eye which could account for my left eye dominance despite right-handedness.

Easiest thing to do is just to make an OK gesture with one hand, focus on something through the thumb/index circle, then close one eye or the other to see which is looking through it.

I'm a left/left person and I haven't noticed one eye really being worse yet anyways. If it's like everything else I got genetically my right will be crap.

hmm the OK thing worked I guess I am left eye dominant because when I close my eyes the background changes for my right eye but not my left.

I was into archery for awhile. My dad and I both are left handed / right eye dominant, so we shot right handed.

right handed but I can alternate eyes. I usually shoot with both eyes open anyway, reduces eye fatigue. left handed rifles suck hard to find in stores, my company doesn't even carry them or order them.

I never used no fancy handed rifles, all the ones that I've used were amphibious.

I'm right handed, right eye dominant. I was left eye dominant, but I just used the right eye anyway and it eventually became the default.

I shoot right handed except when I was in the USMC and had to do the kneeling shots. I can't for some reason get into anywhere close to a tight shooting position resting on my right knee.

The 200 YD kneeling for some reason was my worst. I had to shoot left handed in that, other than that though, right hand / right eye.

Left handed, right eye dominant. When I played sports, I threw with my right hand, batted right hand, etc., but writing utensils and forks/spoons go in my left hand. Also shoot guns/archery right handed.

Right eye, right handed, but if I jerk off it's with both hands, go figure.
