    Alienware

So my HP tx1000z that I've had for about 16 months is slowly deteriorating. The motherboard in this laptop is crap and I'm losing function of components one by one.

So now I have to get a new laptop, a dependable one. So my question is how dependable is alienware stuff? I see their ads everywhere but I don't really know anyone who has their stuff.

If money means nothing to you, go for it.

Otherwise there are many alternatives around. If you're in the US I'm sure some people around here can point you at the right direction.

well I was trying to get a good gaming laptop and alienware actually seems to have the cheaper price compared to its components.

Alienware has a cheaper price? Seriously? Alienware is like buying a product for the name only ~ there are other solutions out there much cheaper that do the same thing, they just don't look as pretty/have the name. BTW, why are you using a laptop for gaming? Unless you move around lots its typically better to go with a desktop, going to be cheaper for one thing, and much easier to play with the guts in it. The Alienware computers also come with their own proprietary software that majorly blows chunks ~ I've had a couple friends who've bought Alienware previously and were very unhappy with it.

Then again, I am biased against using a laptop for anything except mobility, which is why the only one I'll ever own is the type that conforms to the same application of my Intel Atom eeePC I currently own.

Well actually I was gonna rebuild my desktop over the summer but since my laptop decided to crap out I doubt I'd be able to afford both, and my laptop is more important than my desktop at this point so I thought why not get a laptop that can at least play some newish games.

I'm still looking at this point but compared to a few other sites I've looked alienware had the 15.4 inch screen one at a ok price.

I bought an alienware laptop a few years back, I was generally pleased with it, never crapped out on me and still works fine. But I agree with the general consensus that shits expensive.

I'd pass on the alienware and go for something like the IBM Thinkpad. My cousin had a Alienware, it runs fine and all but it gets extremely HOT.

As mentioned already. If you wanna pay for an Alien-stamped Dell laptop thats beyond overpriced. Go for it, otherwise there are many other companies out there for even half the price and same spec. (ibuypower, etc.)

Alright thanks, I was originally looking at ibuypower but I had a bit of a bad experience with them years ago. Might just look at them again though.

I know you're probably already convinced, but don't get a gaming laptop . Making your own desktop is so much less expensive and you'll use much more powerful equipment. I say get a well balanced notebook, and build a new gaming desktop. I have a lenovo thinkpad T400. I'd recommend this laptop (or thinkpads in general) to anyone. It's built like a tank, and has a handy feature where I can switch between integrated and dedicated graphics if I need the power or mobility. And I think 14" is the perfect size for a laptop, not too big, not too small.

Man fuck Alienware. A friend of mine ordered one and immediately cancelled when he found out he could get a machine twice as good than their yet to be released model release for the same price.

If you fancy pissing away cash on an Alienware check this thread: http://www.bluegartr.com/forum/64357...on-laptop.html

    Good alternatives suggested there.

For what it's worth my friend got his from Gaming Laptops - XOTIC PC - Gaming Notebooks - Custom Laptops - Custom Notebooks a few years back and has had no problems with it.

No kidding. Shit's so expensive.. I figure you pay for the name and the "cool" case, even though I think that's so fucking tacky. :/

Alright, thanks for the suggestions and links. You would think if Alienware's stuff was a bit more expensive you could depend on their product a little more, but after looking around apparently not.

As for the whole gaming laptop thing. I don't really use my desktop a whole lot, mainly because I'm not in my room a lot and I have a playstation 3. I'm really only planning on using the laptop for light gaming but able to play games at least from last year. In the meantime though I'm trying to slowly rebuild my desktop for gaming when my budget allows. Hopefully my next laptop won't just start dying 2 months after the warranty expires.

As someone who has the m15x (which it seems is the one you are looking at from Alienware), DON'T GET IT. Cheap piece of shit, I've had to send it in for repairs 3 times since I bought it, and I still have problems with it. Right now am trying to get my money back via lemon law because the problem I am having right now (sound issue) has been 'fixed' 3 times by them (in addition to that I've also had to replace the flimsy keyboard 3 times, and the hinge on the left side of the monitor broke).

When I first bought the system I had a HELL of a time trying to fix other issues with it, namely mouse and keyboard issues (google: alienware m15x keyboard response and you will end up with things like this:

    AW m15x keyboard problem
m15x keyboard lag and other problems ... So i got my m15x on Friday and I am already back with more computer problems!!!First off, has anyone had this problem ...

Any time I was playing a game (Final Fantasy XI) there would be noticable dropped keystrokes, especially when I typed words like 'there' or any other word with the same letter in quick succession. The case itself feels like it's made from cheap plastic (like a thicker type of plastic that they use to make credit cards -- not what I would expect a laptop to be made out of)...

If you really wanna hear more you can PM me, but.. just don't do it. Trust me, you WILL be disappointed.

My Alienware laptop has been back to the shop 4 times now for repair. and for the past 6months its been a very very heavy paperweight. the screen fell of a crack where the vents are appeared the cd tray clicks and nothing turns on anymore. I gave up and bought a computer from Chillblast in the end lol. i know its not a laptop but my comp is so reliable now :D

AW is way over rated (esp for an old crappy dx9 PS2 port like FFXi) - and ive heard a lot of nightmare stories about the support - if you need to have a real brand and bang for the buck - i prefer voodoo xD

This. Also, newegg has some decently priced medium to high end laptops from time to time

    this.

dell xps systems provide excellent performance for pricing and their customer service is actually not a pain in the ass type of experience. you might say "loldell" but their shit's actually not that bad on the medium to high end range,
