Pokemon was just filler from episode 1 to now. It is an extremely poor example of Pokemon and has little to do with the game other than character designs.

On the other hand Digimon is like "my first shonen anime!" and had arcs with main villains and mini-bosses and consistent power ups and all that crazy shit. Considering Digimon were fucking tamagotchis, I'd say they did pretty okay to improving the formula.
