As you are signing up they give you multiple warnings regarding the 2 hour shut off issue.

happily posting from 7, unless I find some huge bugs I'm sticking with this for longterm.

Edit: however I've noticed with IE8 (idk if this is a 7 problem or just IE) any new tabs im making won't connect atm but other pages work fine. Not too sure what's going on.

It said that it'd start shutting down the machine every two hours starting in March 2010, with it becoming fully non-functional in June 2010.

However, since the actual release is supposed to be this fall, it's a more than adequate grace period.

I have to admit, I was a little skeptical from all the beta hype, but I put the RC on my laptop and I'm really fucking liking it. I got everything installed and it's running stable with no compatibility issues so far.

One thing I really do like about it is the new UAC panel. The second most relaxed setting, which simply intercepts weird executions and system setting changes, is fucking awesome. I mean, I just put Windows Defender and Eset smart security into paranoia modes to cover programs doing stuff in the background I didn't want them too, but the new UAC panel pretty much takes care of everything without being nearly as intrusive as the patched Vista one.

I loved Vista and didn't have any trouble with it in the slightest, and this is still a positive, better experience overall. Assuming things continue to work out this well, they'll have a day one customer here. :D

Just got this up and running, the start menu STILL makes me want to switch back to Vista even though this is the third time of me trying to get used to it. Fuck that stupid search bar thing and the recently opened applications. That's what the fucking quick launch is for, which they also got rid of in favor of this super gay pinning to the taskbar thing.

    FUCK

I can't even get the damn thing installed. Both 32bit and 64bit seem to hang at the end of the installation with just a black screen that says Windows 7, Evaluation Copy build 7100 at the bottom right. According to searching it seems it may be a video issue but haven't found a solution yet.

I just tried to install RC1 and after getting I would assume to the end, it decided my computer was no longer suitable for upgrade and recovered Vista. I'm assuming it was my ATI Control Center that caused it to do that, but I'm not 100%.

Either way, that's enough for one night..

I would highly advise against upgrading, ever, for any reason. Just go into the advanced options on your drive and format it first.

I usually don't do upgrades on Windows system. The only reason I considered this for the RC was because I know when its time I would buy a full version upgrade and just wipe the system clean.

At least it fully restored the system back to normal. This is a much better experience than my last upgrade (Windows 95.. /shiver)

I found out the solution to my problem if anyone has something similar. Apparently it didn't like the fact I had 2 monitors plugged into my 8800gts. Unplugged the 2nd monitor and Win7 64bit is a go!

I managed to get the quick launch back after some googling, though the one thing driving me nuts (the search thing at the bottom of the start menu) seems unremovable. For that matter, I can't figure out what it's searching, because it sure as fuck isn't the start menu. Not being able to hit "control-escape, r" to get to the run menu...........GAH

Other than that though I really like it

Someone for the love of god tell me how I can get permissions on my secondary hard drives to open my own god damn files. Is this something Vista introduced?

edit: Found a way to disable this UAC shit, still can't copy files off my old hard drives though. So neat!
edit2: Apparently I had to assume ownership of my own files... Gonna take some getting used to with 0 Vista experience I guess.

Still downloading the RC. So does WindowsKey+E = Libraries still or does it open Computer? I submitted that as being a bad change... Not sure if they fixed.

Uhhh...why would you want a quicklaunch bar on the taskbar in w7 when you can just pin applications to it...? Seems redundant to me. The search bar I've found to be pretty damn good as well, liked Spotlight when I had a powerbook. The vista search bar wasn't as fast and efficient, win7 definitely improved on it.

Winkey+E still opens up explorer normally for me. Winkey+R opens up run menu. Win+arrows shifts windows left/right, maximizes, minimizes. Some other stuff I'm forgetting.

I guess I need to get a keyboard with a windows key Right now there's no way for me to get the run window open with the keyboard.

As for disabling quick launch, I think it's just something I have to get used to. I don't like right now how the pinned items stay in order rather than non-open applications being on the left. Also having to right click and hit the application again to open another instance is just something else I'll have to warm up to.

Edit: Also, somehow while stripping down on services I actually totally removed the search option on the start menu. I can't figure out which one did it though.

This is everything disabled, some were already that way

mousewheel button click will open up new instances of programs. And if I were to hazard a guess, its probably the computer browser that disabled the start menu search bar.

Oh, fancy, the middle click is awesome, thanks for that.

I think I figured out what killed the search bar, and it wasn't anything related to services. Don't mind me >.>

Edit: got it back and it's borked, though it was like this since I tried using it which is why I branded it useless

Edit2: fixed it, I'm an idiot
