    protecting cables from dog?

I have a dog that is highly energetic (German Shepherd), and when he was younger he would chew on ends of cords. He has seem to stopped chewing on them a few months ago (chewing through a plugged in laptop cord, and getting a jolt probably helped) but I'm still cautious of putting my PC/Consoles back up into my game/relaxation room without some type of protection.

Is there anything like a plastic "tunnel" that could work? or something that is normally designed to organize cables that could work? I really don't want to hide all my cords in the wall >.>

    thanks.

Put tea tree oil on the cables and let dry. I bet your dog wont ever touch another one for the rest of his life. Our APBT used to do this.

    Amazon.com: cord organizer

There are lots of ways to organize cords, but there's also methods like Hiroko mentioned (and pet shops sell some natural sprays that have other smells/tastes which offend dogs, too).

I'd recommend the dog spray thing as well, we used it and it works well on anything you don't want him to touch. German Shepards are pretty smart eventually he'll get the idea that cords are bad.

You can buy this spray called "Bitter Apple" from pet stores (or if not that, then something similar). It's used to discourage pets from biting things because it tastes really awful. When my dog was a puppy he went through a very short bottom-of-pants biting phase, and we used this.

Just spray some of it on whatever you don't want him gnawing.

I have tried this, my dog is either just use to it....or very stubborn. Either way, it only works for one day on whatever I spray lol

I'm gonna look into that "hidden" cord organizer, thinking grabbing a organizer and spraying it with something.

    Thanks everyone.

My cat chews on cables all the fucking time. I put bitter apple and lemon juice and neither stopped him for long. He's just lick the cable; tilt his ears back; and start chomping away. -_-

Either dog spray, or apply negative stimulus whenever he chews them. The best way is to yell a command word at him, or physically stop the animal from doing what it is doing. Our dog used to nibble at us (affectionately, but it wasn't a very nice experience...) untill we started streaming in pain whenever he tried to do it, he soon learnt that humans don't like to be nibbled and has since stopped. (Though he has taken to licking instead of nibbling...)

I can understand what you're going through though, our dog is also a VERY energetic german sheperd and he's sometimes a complete pain in the ass. They just need very strong discipline. Eventually they get the message...

Give me your dog, I'll wear him out.

GSDs need a strong commands to learn anything. They are very smart dogs, number 2 or 3 I believe out of all breeds, but can be stubborn. Work with him and let him know it's not ok any time he goes after it. If he continues to do it, dragging him outside (assuming you have a fenced yard or very strong rope) and keeping him out there for 30-60 minutes any time he stop obeying can work too.

Sprays and stuff might work, you may want to do that while training, but in the long term actually having him know not to chew on them because it's not ok with you will work better, and work when you forget to spray some new cord or something.

As, if your dog doesn't have something to chew on, you should look into that. My dogs ate fresbees and tennis balls and would go through edible bones in about a day, but he needs something to keep his teeth strong and clean.

Ours has a plastic watering can which has been completely obliterated. He never chews soft toys though, it's quite cute, he walks around with them in his mouth, carefully putting them down whenever he's bored of them. I've seen him licking the one that makes a squeeking sound whenever he bites it too hard.

    GSDs are characters.

My 2nd dog actually liked the taste of Bitter Apple. Spraying it on anything was a surefire way to get it destroyed.
