To be honest, most of Metal Gear Solid 3 made no sense to me, I sat through most of it thinking "Something about World War 2 and the Cold war, Metal gears havent been invented yet but they have but they suck, Boobs, lol I have an arrow stuck in my head in every cutscene, The End is retarded, The new (old?) Vamp is a homo, Volgin is gay lololol, Lol nuclear radiation, stupid bitch in outer space, okay I'm supposed to care now? Lol quick draw fight with Ocelot this is cool. OHSHI. Oh it was just a blank."
My exact thought process.

^ Is probably one of my most favorite series of games ever made. I am so glad I got the first one when it came out. I will seriously considering purchasing a PS3 just for Yakuza 3 when it does inevitably come out. Decent but repetitive combat. Amazing stories in both that would be worthy of any filmmaker.

Ok since most of these are MGS and seem pretty epic without reading them, how high of a priority should it be for me to finish MGS1 so I can play the rest?
Very high. Get a gamecube and get the remake. Though many purists will disagree, the graphics can be a bit of a problem to overcome nowadays, though if you're willing to persevere it's definately a good game (and series!)
If you know whats good for you, get the ps1 version. The remake shit all over the game and I weep whenever I hear somebody say they prefer it. MGS1 is by far my favorite game of all time, the best of the series.
I Wanna Be The Guy, after going through a short gauntlet of platforming hell, there's always an innocuous platform or background object that unexpectedly turns into a dangerous object and kills you JUST as you think you get to safety.
As far as "wtfawesome" Shocking Moments go MGS4 Act 4 with the flashback audio in certain spots as you play through was incredible.
When I got to the entrance I just put the controller down and left the room. I could not handle the awesome contained in that level and the boss fight at the end was icing on the cake.
The Patriots reveal in Act 3 was pretty heavy too, never saw any of that coming, likewise.Spoiler: show
That last part of the fight when you can barely swing a punch takes it from awesome to best evar.
The post-credits was on par with Act 4. The credits roll and you're all "wtf he wasn't in the game ohshitheis"
System Shock 2 Shodan reveal is still a bitch to this day.
Cloud <> Zack thing was pretty epic back in the day as far as mindfucks go.
Aeris/Aerith thing is hilarious once you notice the cutscene is on the back of the CD case.
The Therese and Jeanette Voerman thing from Vampire:Bloodlines. Fuck that Malkavian blood is some potent shit.
Having a conversation with a Stop sign and Traffic lights in Bloodlines is right up there on the shocking list too. Especially if you've never played that clan before.
I don't think anything can beat the final scene of MGS4...
Eternal Darkness

Shocking? I think so.
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong... That abomination completely shat on the whole feel of what MGS is. I was SO excited when I heard that was coming out and SOOOO disappointed when I played it. As a game it's meh at best, as MGS it's blasphemy and garbage. No offense brotha, but I couldn't let him do that. Not with MGS1. If you like Resident Evil, that remake is great.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes... ^ He speaks the truth.
