Ok since most of these are MGS and seem pretty epic without reading them, how high of a priority should it be for me to finish MGS1 so I can play the rest?

Depends on the style of games you enjoy. I've had everyone since the game came out hammer me on how great this game was and how I needed to play. I think I've start and stopped the first one about 20 times because I just can't get into it. For me, it's garbage and wouldn't recommend at all, but if you started playing it and enjoyed it but never finished it, go ahead and finish; it's a pretty stale period for games anyway.

Gamecube one has updated gameplay but the ps1 version feels good and is epic. It's not for everyone, but if you enjoy a good story (and it is a story, so epic long cut scenes and conversation) then I recommend playing. MGS2 onwards have much better gameplay and the story is still as good, so play MGS1. Or at the very least, try it.

One of the best plot twists ever was in Persona 3 if only because it takes so many things and ties them all together at once:

Death was locked inside of the MC by Aigis and it turned out he was Ryoji.
It explains why Aigis hates Ryoji.
It explains why Aigis feels so strongly for the MC.
It explains why Pharos shows up in MC's dreams.
It explains why Thanatos pops up in the very beginning of the game.
It explains why the MC is so powerful compared to everyone else.
It explains why Ryoji showed up after all 12 big shadows were defeated.

I mean, that was the spoiler to end all spoilers.

Only other game that comes to mind right away is Xenogears. What I loved about that game's story was that so many things seemed so unbelievably random throughout the game and yet nearly every single one, no matter how weird or how out of place it seemed when it occured, is eventually explained. The game really needs to be played at least twice, if not more, to thoroughly grasp the plot.

Edit: Ohhhh shit, how could I forget Mother 3? It occurs very early in the game, but it's still one of my top 3 shocking videogame moments of all-time, maybe number one.

It all turned out Klonoa wasn't actually from that world and was brought their to help and had false memories implanted. As Lephise sings her song of rebirth he is slowly sucked into the portal in the sky. Still brings a tear to my eyes! ;_;

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong... That abomination completely shat on the whole feel of what MGS is. I was SO excited when I heard that was coming out and SOOOO disappointed when I played it. As a game it's meh at best, as MGS it's blasphemy and garbage. No offense brotha, but I couldn't let him do that. Not with MGS1. If you like Resident Evil, that remake is great.

King's Quest

Gwydion being Alexander, son of Graham and uh, whatever the queen's name was. Also, turning Mannanan into a cat. AND KICKING HIM AND HIS PET CAT TOO. The rest of the series is a bit hazier, but I do remember finding out that I couldn't complete KQ5 some 8-9 hours into the game after missing a very brief scene with a cat and a mouse some 3-4 hours in, which could only be solved if you'd already been to the desert, made sure to pick up the boot, and reacted fast enough to throw the boot at the cat. This chain reacted into you getting a pie, which, I shit you not, you throw at a Yeti. This is the only solution to the yeti I ever found. Also, fucked if you ate the pie. Which you can.

Planescape: Torment

Obviously too many to go into detail on, which can be covered by saying "All of TNO's past." Dakkon being his slave. Morte not being a mimir, not a mimir AT ALL, but fuck it he was awesomer than any mimir. The first time I played with the doll of the Lady of Pain and got sliced into ribbons. Hey, I succeeded in my quest to die, right? Getting to answer the great question the game poses, and finding out it didn't really matter (but kind of does, supposedly there IS a right answer but I've never discovered how to confirm that in-game).

A bit obscure, but Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager

THE FUCKING TARRASQUE was the ravager in question. Also you have to fight it. Yes, it is hard. No, it is not tarrasque hard. But then, this is Dark Sun, where the average commoner NPC has 1-3 psionic disciplines and is thoroughly proficient in at least 6 different weapons.
