Of course, when it comes to another country that thinks that HE is one of the "dregs of society", then they're defaming him and trampling on his rights. He should be cheering them on for exercising their power as a sovereign nation to close their borders to what they view as human trash, just like he proposes for the US.

very nice way of summing it up.

I also think we're on the verge of some right-wing reactionary violence in the US (hell, we've arguably seen some already... remember the immigrant center shooting in NY?). a bunch of yahoos are talking about a million-man armed protest in D.C., people are stockpiling guns and ammo, select silly ass Teabaggers made threats on the lives of gov't officials on twitter, etc.

ruby ridge, waco, OK city all over again. well hopefully not, but I sadly wouldn't be surprised if the trend continued. savage is the mouthpiece for the kind of ideology that motivates those people.

ok a tad sensationalist on my part perhaps and I still don't fully agree with britain banning savage (until more serious transgressions, at least) but god I can't help but lol at this.

I think that's quite different tbh. Immigrants are people coming to a place specifically to live. You are basically saying that the way we let legal immigrants in (they submit an application, some are denied, etc) is akin to blacklisting individuals from this country. That is entirely false.

Why isn't Rush Limbaugh involved in this thread? I don't listen to Rush or any of his ilk, but the few bits of Rush's show I've allowed myself to hear over the years, he's over-exaggerating hypocritical windbag that does nothing but insult people who disagree with him. I can't see him staying silent on anything Savage and Glenn Beck would be spewing and foaming at the mouth about. Not that I watch or listen to any of those three, I try to avoid them all as much as possible. I prefer to rot my brain playing videos games and reading.
(Al Franken's book "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot"; was a hilarious read.)

My sister works in the State Department on the Visa line and she, for example, turns down college kids who don't have a good plan for immigrating to the USA or someone tips the office off to the person's plan to make use of the Welfare system on purpose. Is that blacklisting?

Not to sidetrack...but the immigrant center shooting in Binghamton was done by a Chinese immigrant who had taken classes there and was upset over losing his job as well as other factors. Not even arguably right-wing anti-immigrant motivated.

I said nothing of the sort. Perhaps you should actually read the posts that you reply to before firing off your knee-jerk "YOU'RE WRONG" post. I'll give you a hint, I said nothing about either legal immigration or immigration standards. Neither my somewhat satirical post nor Savage's statements on the matter are about immigrants, they apply to anyone crossing the border. Savage wants the US government to stop the "dregs of society" from crossing the border period, and the UK government seems to want the same.

As someone who listened to his radio show almost daily in HS, I can tell you for a fact that is completely untrue. Savage, as he always tells you, comes from a family of immigrants. All he wants is people to use the proper channels and to not be leeches when they come over. That's the same thing our system tries to do. idk where you are getting your info but his radio show will tell you what he thinks on the matter.

Actually, the "dregs of society" bit is straight out of one of his books. He's very clear there that he thinks that a country should have the right to stop ANYONE THEY WANT from crossing the border. Unless, of course, that anyone is him.

which book and it what context? I'm not saying I don't believe you but it's hard to take what you say at face value without knowing the context. tbh the way you are saying it just sounds like he calls the criminals/welfare leeches that come into this country "dregs of society" because, well, they are.

And Great Britain seems to think that he's one of the "dregs of society". There's no problem then, is there? GB is a sovereign nation with the right to control their own borders. They're following his advice, trying to keep out people who they view as subversive and dangerous. You can disagree with that, but hey, if you spend so much time on the radio promoting the idea, that makes you a blatant hypocrite.

The context for that exact phrase is page 122 of "The Savage Nation". It's available on Google Books. I can't copy/paste from it, but the paragraph surrounding that phrase makes it pretty clear. He's not specifically talking about legal immigrants, and he's not proposing some kind of non-controversial immigration reform (which I support, since you brought it up) like you seem to think. He's talking about stopping people who are "dregs of society" (defined by him, of course) right at the border. Precisely what Great Britain is doing, albeit on a small scale and with a different definition of undesirable than he would like.

erm. He defined the dregs of society as those that a) come over the border to kill americans. b) wish to commit terrorist acts c) mooch the system. I don't understand how you can compare this to britain not allowing people in their country they don't agree with.
This isn't even the point here. Savage is not trying to restrict freedom of speech - which you cannot deny that Britain is doing. The only reason Britain thinks he is a "dreg of society" is because of his speech - that is the point. But I guess I'm just not getting it.

I know US's economic system is quite dependent on undocumented immigrants; i wonder if the same applies to the UK.

I doubt it. US illegals help the farming industry because they will work for practically nothing. I don't see any kind of parallel that could occur for Britain.

edit: damn your cognitive science and use of the frame "undocumented." When did it become politically incorrect to call them illegal for...breaking the law?

a jerk thing to say that is a fib
idk how "illegal" became a derogatory term. Hell I think it's nice people don't just call them aliens and preface it with illegal

I don't know why it's important that they be called illegals, but they are, quite literally, immigrants without the proper documentation. Hence undocumented immigrants.

nah, I get what you are saying, but it was just a name change that happened in the last few years. They were called illegal immigrants for years and years and years and then in the last decade they are "undocumented immigrants." hijacks of frames happens all the time, though, and by both parties so idk why this one just makes me rage. Undocumented Immigrant is literally a phrase a dude in a cubicle at a think tank thought up lol

If you think that simple disagreement is why he was banned, you're even more of a lunatic than I thought.

You'd do well to study the British laws on free speech, rather than simply assuming that the American ones apply as Savage does. When you are outside of America, you play by the rules of the country you're in, you don't break them and then scream about your first amendment rights when they kick you out. They're well within their rights to kick him out, and that's the fundamental issue, not whether Michael Savage feels it's unfair. Like I said, a country's right to control its borders (regardless of what people from other countries think) is something that Savage has asserted over and over. He just doesn't like it used against him, which makes him a hypocrite.
