There's magic in this world, but it's not as prevalent as other fantasy novels. One of the series strengths I think.

There is, however, more magic stuff in the novel up to the point in the novels that episode 6 of the TV show is at. But still pretty subtle.

I thought the scene with Bronn being Tryion's champion was excellent, but they should have explained that he won because he didn't load himself down with armour like the knight did. Catelyn didn't react very much to the fight, not nearly as much as she did in the book.

Ser Jorah Mormont's actor is pretty good too. He's really filling the role well, and I didn't think he looked like Jorah when I first saw him.

I think the scene with Bronn and the other knight (can't recall his name) is pretty obvious. You see him getting loaded with armor, and this massive shield, while he's wearing what, a leather tunic? If you can't put 1 + 2 together that way, well... that person is pretty dumb. I mean they could have said something like "Oh look at him, wearing no armor!" But that I think just insults the intelligence of the audience. Though... knowing the average TV watcher is not saying much.

Agreed. Don't watch episode 7. I did it, and I'm soooo paying for it to the point of thinking about not being lazy and actually reading the books.

Grabbed the books four episodes in. 70% of they way through the first. I hope to finish it tomorrow. Best choice ever. The book really fleshes out the series, and is a great companion. The book/series help each other in understanding the incredibly vast story.

Can't wait til the next scene at The Wall.

If I skip ahead in the books to where the show is, will I be missing much from the books? Also, what chapter should I start off at to be where the show is? Thanks!

Well, after a quick google it looks like chapter 50 is right where the show is. Pretty eager to get to that point in the book, so guess I'll get to reading! Shouldn't take too long.

Kinda interesting that on Amazon, new copies of the book are cheapest, used are more expensive, and kindle versions are most expensive. I would think it would be the other way around.

My book doesn't have chapters, just names. But the chapters jump a bit. Like, for instance, there's a scene with Dany that takes place in the show much much earlier than it does in the book. They way the book is written (in a 1st person perspective of sorts, but with many different vantage points) does not work for television. So, simply saying, I'll start at chapter 50 isn't really going to cut it.

To answer your question though, episode 7 ends at chapter 50, although chapter 55 is the "golden crown" scene. As I said, it jumps around. Read the whole book.

I agree with Tyche, the way Martin writes doesn't allow you to skip right a head as the chronology of the story does not match up perfectly with the chapters.
