When I watched some of the earlier episodes yesterday, I didn't realize how much dialogue I failed to pick up on before I had read the book. The books really brought it out.

Ned may have been able to legitimize them with his power as Hand / Regent.

That said, I don't think it was ever implied. All he said was that he would keep Robert's bastards safe and well provided for. It was pretty clear he supported Stannis.

Think your confusion comes from the title. Lord Protector doesn't = King. It's just the reagent until the heir comes of age. In Ned's eyes though the heir was already of age, and his name was Stannis.

I honestly saw the part with the queen ripping up the note coming. It was running through my mind the whole time while he was writing it down; "it's just a piece of paper and it's not gonna do shitlolol" LOOKS LIKE I WAS RIGHT.

Ned didn't write it the way Robert said it. Ned wrote he'd serve as regent until his rightful heir (not son) came along. Renly was going with what Ser Loras tried to tell him during the super homo scene, that he should be king because he'd be a good King. Even if his claim isn't legitimate.

There was a very specific reason he did that:

Joffery isn't Robert's son, therefore he has no claim to the throne.

I'm really missing Sandor's involvement. They've cut him to a bit part basically. Disappointing, he's one of my favourites.

I really like Daenerys but the actress playing her is so wooden sometimes.

I'm curious how much time passes in between books, (I have not read them) does the 2nd book pick up right at the end of the first book? If so, have they already filmed all the seasons? The reason I ask is I don't want them to have problems with children actors like other shows have (Lost) with the kids growing up and not fitting into their roles. 4 years is a lot of time for kids, there is a huge difference in looks from 12 to 16 and I would hate for them to replace the kid actors every season because the original kids grew to much in between seasons.

There was supposed to be a five year time break between books four and five originally, but then four got split into two books, so prehaps there will be a break between five and six.

Next episode has some Sandor + Sansa scenes. Looks like they're just moving his obsession with her back a little bit.

Both good news!

I think he's scrapped the gap for good. It was originally going to be between books three and four and then after he wrote three he pushed it back to between books four and five, and then once he started writing book 4 he decided it just wasn't going to work. I think that's what caused book 4 to be way to long to fit in one edition and caused the split.

Also sort of unrelated to everything else but while the show has made some amazing casting choices (Jorah, Arya, and Varys are so perfect you'd swear GRRM had those people in mind when he wrote the characters) but they really missed the mark with Renly. It's the one major casting misstep I feel they've made as he just doesn't fit the character and really seems out of place in the show.
