Son has to be trueborn, bastards get nothing, as should be evident with Jon.

And if you're a big Tyrion fan, book 2 is a must. Get to reading. As stated earlier, the books and series compliment each other well. When I watched some of the earlier episodes yesterday, I didn't realize how much dialogue I failed to pick up on before I had read the book. The books really brought it out.

Ned may have been able to legitimize them with his power as Hand / Regent.

That said, I don't think it was ever implied. All he said was that he would keep Robert's bastards safe and well provided for. It was pretty clear he supported Stannis.

Ah. I had to play the vid on mute as I can't stand Lily Allen so if the lyrics alluded to him, my bad.

Think your confusion comes from the title. Lord Protector doesn't = King. It's just the reagent until the heir comes of age. In Ned's eyes though the heir was already of age, and his name was Stannis.

Yeah that didn't occur to me either, I originally thought the "true heir" thing eluded to one of his bastards.

I honestly saw the part with the queen ripping up the note coming. It was running through my mind the whole time while he was writing it down; "it's just a piece of paper and it's not gonna do shitlolol" LOOKS LIKE I WAS RIGHT.

There was a very specific reason he did that:
    Spoiler: show
Joffery isn't Robert's son, therefore he has no claim to the throne.

As to the bastards discussion, a King (or his regent, I'm assuming) can legitimize them. Kinda book spoilery
    Spoiler: show
Like Stanis offered John Snow in Book 3

I'm really missing Sandor's involvement. They've cut him to a bit part basically. Disappointing, he's one of my favourites.

I really like Daenerys but the actress playing her is so wooden sometimes.

Gratuitous lesbian sex scenes + waggling penis.

And yeah, Ned is an idiot.

    Next episode has some

    book stuff

    Spoiler: show
Sandor + Sansa scenes. Looks like they're just moving his obsession with her back a little bit.

There was supposed to be a five year time break between books four and five originally, but then four got split into two books, so prehaps there will be a break between five and six.

yeah my wording was unclear. My point was renly doesn't have much of a claim, but has more than bastards.

Renly has no claim, neither do any of the bastards. By the succession laws of Westeros Stannis is the true heir and there is nothing else to be said.

Renly's whole philosophy was that he had as much claim as Robert did when he was overthrowing Aerys, though.

    Bookish
    Spoiler: show
He would overthrow Joffrey and claim the throne by right of conquest, if he had to. That way he would supersede Stannis.

but yeah all the claims and succession laws and rights are a bit silly as the original Aegon had no claim to anything and Robert Baratheon was much the same

    Both good news!
I think he's scrapped the gap for good. It was originally going to be between books three and four and then after he wrote three he pushed it back to between books four and five, and then once he started writing book 4 he decided it just wasn't going to work. I think that's what caused book 4 to be way to long to fit in one edition and caused the split.

Also sort of unrelated to everything else but while the show has made some amazing casting choices (Jorah, Arya, and Varys are so perfect you'd swear GRRM had those people in mind when he wrote the characters) but they really missed the mark with Renly. It's the one major casting misstep I feel they've made as he just doesn't fit the character and really seems out of place in the show.
