Pretty sure for members of the Kingsguard, the king and the king alone is their concern, not the realm. This is also why Jaime is first and foremost known as the Kingslayer and generally commands very little respect or trust, because he broke that very rule.
Selmy is not Jaime though, and his duty and honor prevents him from helping someone he probably respects more in favor of not breaking the Kingsguard code. Formally crowned or not, there is a very distinct line of succession that the Kingsguard honor, and it is not whoever is politically in charge.

Game of Thrones is a super popular topic for comics/rage comics over at Reddit.
bahahaha nice.
for those only watching the show - I started reading GoT seriously today, and am almost 100-pages through. Damn, do yourself a favor and read. I think it actually helps having seen the show -- this is my first time reading a book after seeing adapted characters, and I must say, it's nice to automatically put faces in my mind and move already existing characters. As well, it's great to hear the show's characters, who are all well-cast, in my head as I read dialogue. And of course, you get so much more information. I'm only probably 10-minutes into the 2nd show, progression-wise. But the white walker scene, for example, which opens the book, is done so much better in the book.
Also, do it for the direwolves.
I think books are more enjoyable when you see the movie/show first. Just my opinion but I love the fact that I can actually see scenes play out in my head like an actual episode with the actors that are in the show. Obviously its not possible with every novel but of those I do watch the show first tend to be my favorite.
Those of you debating to start reading or not will have your decision easily made for you after this season. I just finished book 1 myself not 5 minutes ago, and am so happy book 2 is right here right now.
Also, books make it much easier to follow all of the characters. Before i started reading it was pretty much face descriptions from the shows, or titles, or Boromir; now i know names.
I agree wholeheartedly - I'm getting a lot more out of the characters, and remembering them much better. It was sad when, in the last episode, they mentioned Renly had left the Red Keep, it took me a long time to recall who Renly was...
For those starting, this wiki is pretty good for getting a little background on some characters/pairing them up with their actors (they show pictures for the chars that appear in the show) -- however, it contains spoilers. Thus far, I haven't spoiled anything just reading the initial general description.
I saw the first episode before I started reading them, and I'll agree that having seen some of those faces really helped a lot when reading it. The descriptions in the book matched the characters I had already seen so well that there was no dissonance and it just clicked in my mind, which obviously helped me to just sink into the book. I particularly never shook for the least bit the images of Ned, Arya, Cersei, Robert, Cat, and most of all, Tyrion. The others took on slightly different shapes in my mind, but those were just too perfect.
The only thing the show has broken for me a bit is some of the voicing. For the first book, I actually got through the vast majority of it listening to the audiobook and Roy Dotrice is fucking AMAZING. He had so many different voices that fit characters so well. I still hear his extremely distinctive Varys and Tyrion whenever I think of them. The actors are doing a great job, but I really loved the way he did them. The rest of the characters, particularly the female ones (lol), are just fine on the show, but I'm still going to miss the accent he gave Tyrion (and the rest of the Lannisters in a way) and the slobbery shady nature of Varys.

I listened to book 2 on tape my iphone. Roy Dotrice was the reader. Did a great job, but god damn it was slow.
I just read one of my favorite scenes from the show, and it was masterfully done in HBO. Someone earlier complained abt the actress playing Catelyn Tully, but I find her to be perfect. Damn I love this scene:
