The really bad thing about him is that, he STILL plays on ps2. He has ps3, PC but he rather use the ps2 controller to play. He won't learn windower and the plugins and crap, he was complaining one time about hitting 2 macros for healing breath on DRG using the sarium helm because ffxi didn't have enough lines to macro everything! All of us are on PC that play with him and keep saying alot of due to him being crappy is the controller vs keyboard. HE won't even use keyboard on the PS2 or even bother to learn it.

He types like 15WPM or something too, everytime he tries to type a sentence he stops what he's doing and get killed or something, we're so used to this that even one of my other friends goes "stop typing, finish the event first" when he just stops because it's so apparent he's trying to type...

well, first off, thank god he didnt cheat in salvage. He woulda been LM17'd, and prolly /wrists.

Look at it like this. He prolly put in, or tried to put in, a lot of control in his parents divorce, and was unsuccessful. This lead to a general feeling of a lack of control in his life, so he clung on to something he could control, FFXI. In whatever world he is on, he controls the outcome of his toon, its direction, and who he does things with. His life in game and outta game are reversed compared to most gamers. To him, his life happens in vana'diel, fighting off countless sheep, and the eventual NM. His breaks from life happen when he goes into the RL.

He is addicted to the game. While I wouldn't delete his toon or POL acct, I would try and find a way to lock his access up, like cancelling his ISP. Try and get him into situations he can control and have fun in. Simple things like mini-golf or bowling.

Forcing him into real life by cancelling his internet or FFXI account is probably the worst idea for this guy. Doing this will make him feel even more untrusting toward others.
As Snprphnx said above, take him to places where he can have control and enjoy himself, introduce him to the wonder that is real life!

Hard to say what he needs exactly...obviously, his mom is being an enabler, and really should force him to do more for himself. Maybe not pull the rug out of under him, but push him out the door a little at least.

Can't help people who won't help themselves. As long as he doesn't see it as a problem, he won't look for a solution.

His mom supporting this habit is a huge problem as well. Needing money to play FFXI could be enough motivation to get a job. Step 1. It could possibly open his eyes to what he's missing out there in the world. No way to tell really.

Other than needing to get on his own feet I don't see much wrong with wanting to play FFXI during almost all of his spare time. There's a lot of justifiable reasons as to why people prefer to spend their time online.

There's a ton of people out there who do literally almost nothing but watch TV when they're not at work for example. At least with FFXI there's still some sort of social interaction.

I think it's a case of life being overwhelming, rather than an addiction or opportunistic leeching. He's probably had a bad childhood and accumulated lots of psychological issues; uglyness doesn't help either. Those problems drain the motivation he would need to solve them; it's extremely hard to break this circle on your own. Professional help would be the first step.

Hundreds of kids parents get divorced each year and don't turn into this, especially with the fact he was already an adult when they got divorced.
