Yeah same for me, actually (except I'm from Holland). Not entirely FF-related (more FF-forum related than anything else, though): My English (reading/typing) improved tremendously over the past 6 years. Funny, because I only really learned to actually properly get the words out of my mouth a little less than 3 years ago, when I joined university and had to prepare a fuckton of presentations.

Official story: We met at a convention in Ohio during a random vacation.

Real story: We met on a forum for a webcomic.

Living together for over 4 years now and getting married next year!

Yes, unfortunately people aren't very accepting of the rendezvous-via-internet method.

Even with the internet being "out" per se for more than 10 years, people still find it bizarre that you could meet someone through it. Although I think it's more the thing that people find it highly skeptical in success if you meet through a video game more so.

You have E-Harmony and Match.com that are pushing through the mainstream with an older man as its spokesperson. You have the ads on TV for everyone in every generation sitting around in a circle doing text messages and using acronyms like lol, etc.

Even with all this development people still aren't able to properly deal with it and I find that sad.

The younger generations have grown up with the internet as a tool to meet people for dating etc.

Those of us who actually had to make an attempt IRL to meet people because there was no such thing when we were that age have a little more of a difficult time understanding it.

That, and we're bitter that people only have to put 1/100th of the effort into looking for someone to date now thanks to the internet. Plus they get to avoid doing all the stupid shit and having all the embarrassing moments that go hand in hand with single life outside of the net.

Christ...I feel really fucking old right about now.

On topic...I just texted one of my friends "X" when he asked if the Canes won tonight. -.-'

    Borderline I think. AOL still didn't even exist when I was 13 <.< >.>

Edit: Friend just replied "X? X what? You fucked up or what?"

This game has fried my brain.

Relationships build on common interests. I met my (late) wife gaming, my current girlfriend likewise.

If anything, I'd blame a now-chronic stiff neck on FFXI. Played through a long session, fell asleep in the chair, woke up stiff and ended up pulling a muscle. It now acts as my "alarm clock" for when I've been playing too long- first it'll hurt, then it'll set off everything else and I'll feel like a migraine went off in my skull from the stress headache.

Doc even prescribed pain meds when it happened, but I couldn't take em. Too sensitive to the meds, I'd have slept clean through the morning if I took em at night and I couldn't be on the things during work.

Gemstone III. Been there, done that, only it was GEnie.

Everquest and FFXI were dirt-cheap by comparison, GSIII on GEnie was an -hourly- payment.

(On the other hand, customer service was incredible).

AOL member since 1990 and my first Internet game experience was age of empire age of kings. That was the only game that I have spent 11-18 hour on the weekends back in the days and the only reason why only on the weekends back then is because moms was very strict with my education

In other words weekdays school activities only and she ever caught me be online playing the game on a weekday she would unplug everything, put in the closet, and lock the door.

Until Friday arrive or when she got home from work. Honestly it was not for her would probably have been a school drop out and ending up at a dead end job.

    On topic:

When I am on the subway or riding the bus, I usually do the FFXI animations like Utsusemi: Ni (Hume style) Warcry, raging fists (towards my friends or co-workers).

When people intend to piss me off outside the game I usually say do not make fucking SATA on your ass. (Everyone looks at me with the Que? Look)

Sometimes when customers at work annoy me 74% of the time I say do not make jump over this counter and rampage you. The reaction I get from co- workers and customer it is usually the wtf face palm. LOL (I know it is sad)

I think this would be worse I usually do the summoning Carby animation while walking the dog or when we are the park with other dogs and people.

Most of the time, I would say Carby (My dog) Attack!! Out loud. Once I realize what I have said and done the dog’s owners look at me with the wft and que? Face. LOL

Another thing when I do that around my sister she just smacks me at the back of the head letting me know wake the fuck up we are not in FFXI. (Feel safe when she is around)

Forgot to add this sometimes I intend to do the Savage blade weapon skill animation Taru style only!

funny stuff- i found good things to do while waiting for someone to come back from afk in a party/gathering for some event. Spread a bit of beer cheese on the top of each of my dogs heads and watch them try and climb all over eachother to try and get at it. I was kind of drunk, but tried it sober and still laughed really really hard.

Learned that something called Ribfest exists, attended said event, ate tons of ribs, had mud butt for a week.

funny things Mo has: jesus action figure, Mr.T talking key chain (vent was awesome at 3am camps)

I fight all wyrms naked now (irl so shield your eyes) ever since my linkshells successful vrtra straight tank in which i was naked, good luck i guess.

Also, met my wife, have mortgage, dogs, bills etc...

Unless it's someone who already knows, I lie and tell them we met on Facebook or Myspace. Still the shame of meeting on the internet, but not as bad as "we met in a shitty pickup in Garliage".

    Hahaha amazing...

Look at the bright side! At least you guaranteed yourself a spouse that won't get mad at you for playing too much FFXI. When my wife is feeling emo, nothing gets me told that I don't love her as fast as a FFXI event.

    Slightly off-topic...

I joined AOL in '95, dialing up on a, I think, 4800 baud modem. Met my now husband on the Mercedes Lackey forum there. We met in person the following year at Dragon*Con in Atlanta and started dating a few months later. Mid 90's everyone was convinced that the only people you met over the internet were sociopaths like axe murderers. Couple that with the fact we met on a fantasy writer's forum and vacationed at a scifi/fantasy convention? Yeah, not many people get the detailed story when they ask. But on the plus side, we dated long-distance for 5 years while I finished undergrad and grad school. Then I moved from 1500 miles to be with him. We've been married over 5 years now, so those crazy internet romances can work.

It's been said before, but in every other game I always hit the auto-run button and then wonder for a minute why my character is standing still. Auto-run has spoiled me, it should be in every game.

I had to re-bind most of my World of Warcraft keys to reflect my FFXI settings before I could even really play the game.

And I still type "/l" instead of "/g" for guild chat, or if I'm on AIM, I'll actually try to type /emotes and /t in reply.
