Wow, this thread is pretty amazing to me. I go out of my way to prevent any crossovers between the virtual and the real. Only real affect the game has had on me is filling up every second of my spare time (and then some). Still, it is cool to see people hooking up via FFChatroomXI.
Had a dream that I was soloing Aspid with a bravura /dnc and got dfeet'd
I consider communications over a game to be as valid as any over a message board, phone conversation, and so on, so forth. No reason not to, really, considering that digital means of communication are constantly evolving while becoming increasingly popular.
So, if I truthfully consider someone a friend over the interweb, then they're a friend. Period. Of course, this is why I only have a very small amount of people on my Buddy List, and -- to be more on-topic -- my FFXI Friends List. If they're not someone I'd like to kick back and chat with -- meaning they're probably the type to inundate me with meaningless, superficial chatter, Twitter/LiveJournal/MySpace trash, and so on -- they're not on my list.
In summary, I respect the internet as a perfectly valid and respectable means of communication, but only use its myriad means of communication to stay in touch with those I genuinely view as friends. People who have hundreds of people in their contacts, most of whom they hardly know beyond their names -- I would never, ever be interested in that sort of "digital lifestyle."
I'm in texas as well, about an hour from Houston O_O;
Uh, for a college comp class I had to take a few years ago, we were given an an assignment to write an epic style story about something we've done. So I wrote a 3 page paper about a Vrtra kited fight in epic style. I had to fudge a few details to avoid having to elaborate too much and explain job abilities, but overall it came out ok. Got a B on it anyway.
My irl best friend and I got a lot closer due to the game. She's not really playing right now, and that saddens me, then again she's got irl stuff going on that she's not talking to me about. That said, if FFXI did not exist, I would not have met some of the most amazing people I know. No, Linliel, who has become important to me. No Ava, another good friend. I would not have met Ludaen, Enitsu or Nikkei. Met them through another irl friend (Beecher) and they have matured/evolved into people that are rather important in my life.
Actually there are several people even on the forums that I talk to out of the ffxi context. I met seven people in my social that live within 5 miles of me. I did not realize they did (neither did they of each other) till about a year ago.
Friendship is paramount and I thank ffxi for that.
*I developed a habit to always recommend anyone I come into contact, to eat sushi. I'm a cook irl, and sometimes, I will take a look on the synthesis recipe wiki page, and try to imagine how to make the actual meal, but of course substitute it with real ingredients.
*Me and my wife met through FFXI, who when we got together, I learned she lived 3 blocks away from my house.
*I tend to write things in ffxi language, and even talk in auto-translate. "Gather together, when/where," would be the biggest culprit.
*I often fantasize about cosplay mithra with my wife, but she understands.
*I have skipped many family gatherings for FFXI.
I almost failed one of my first-year courses because instead of doing two of the three essays for it I stayed up all night getting merits. Still passed because I'm awesome in exams, but I feel pretty dumb for it now. At least I was strategic with it and only skipped the essays for one course that I could afford to fail.
For various reasons I joined a successions of North American Dynamis and Limbus shells. 5/5 WHM, 5/5 BRD, and 4/5 RDM AF2, 4/5 Nashira, but I developed an addiction to filter coffee and didn't sleep much on Tuesday or Friday nights... 12AM start times for a 4 hour event are not a good idea. Ever. Well, okay, Duelist's Chapeau and Nashira Seraweels were worth it, but I still feel like I'm running a deficit on sleep.
I was in NA endgame shells too... that was stupid - sky farming at 1AM? Okay, there was too much blood in my coffee stream anyway! That all improved when I finally found a decent European one, but again, I missed out on a lot of sleep.
Quite glad I've quit. I can actually concentrate on my courses (which are surprisingly easy when you're spending your time reading instead of claiming Darters), and I get a full nights' sleep every day of the week.
after i got out of the army bc of medical discharge i moved back home with my mom and didnt have a job for 1.5yrs bc i had sum savings and just didnt feel like it, then i got a gf irl and had to get a job for shit like dates/food, she hates ffxi and now that we are married(just celebrated our 1yr anny yesterday). we had sum money issuse so i took a break for a few months, well only 2mo, and now ive been playing in secret only when my wife is at work or out shopping, which works out to liek 3days a week so ive taken to soloing blm.
now i just have to figure out how to tell her i started again w/o making a huge fight.
dont see why she didnt like it, she sat 5 feet away from me on the couch watching tv shows that i cant stand bc they make me feel like ive just wasted 30mins of my life and lost brain cells ill never get back.
so we'll see how it goes after i tell her b4 she finds out on her own lol
Haha, I've totally done this. I barely get any sleep before my morning classes, so I'll often wake up disoriented as hell and wondering what I should gear up before I leave. Sometimes I'm halfway to school before I realize that it's real life.
I met my boyfriend in this game. I came down for a visit to meet him IRL after we'd been "together" a few months, then a few months later I transferred schools to be with him. We've been together almost a year and a half in rl, close to two years total.
I've also been a dancer for nearly 25 years, so often I'll just randomly dance around my apartment or just stretch a little while I'm cooking, etc. I find myself doing casting animations a lot since I've started playing this game.
Point is that in a lot of marriages, couples run out of things to say after so many years and they end up living separate lives in the same house. By sharing the game, we have managed to avoid that.
Also, I try to actively inject FFXI-isms into observations of daily life. It's a lot less taxing than trying to suppress things until your resistance fails and funny things start happening inside your head.
Sometimes when I get ready for work in the mornings and am still half asleep, I'll seriously do a double-take when I walk out the door to make sure I have my keys, a phone, and Sanction.
