Can any of you who have played through Diamond or pearl tell me how in blazes you chain pokemon successfully? I've gotten up to 40 and then try to look for shiny grass but I've had no luck. Everytime I chain I get up too around 20 or so and then my chain just disapears. I'm starting to think I'm going crazy cause I've been at it for hours and I have terrible luck. I just want a shiny Geodude!

Once you get the hang of it, it's actually quite easy, just time consuming. Always go into the patches of grass that rustled the farthest away. These apparently have the highest chance of being the same type of pokemon that you're chaining. Always go into the same type of rustling grass, too.

You don't have to go into the grass if you don't like any of the locations that rustled (ex. all rustling grass was on edges or wasn't same type of rustle from what you've been walking into). Just walk around, charge your radar up and use it again.

Getting to chain 40 doesn't guarantee you a shiny either. At this point it's safe to just walk around charging the radar, use it, and don't walk into any more rustling grass since getting your chain higher isn't going to affect the %rate of a shiny showing up.

After getting 40 it can still take a while to find a shiny patch, but it's all RNG. People on forums say they found a shiny patch after chain 7. Chain 15. Chain 35.

It's extremely frustrating when you're at like chain 30 and it breaks to a freakin bidoof out of no where even though you walked into the same type of grass. It happens. That's RNG for you.

From what I understand

4 bars is 10% catch rate
3 bars is 70% catch rate
2 bars is 50% catch rate
1 bar is 90% catch rate

I've yet to run into a shiny in HG other than the always-shiny Gyarados.

I'm going to have to finish up my Pearl sometime as well, when I do I'll be asking about this chaining thing, lol.

receive gift from nintendo wfc >> go to pokemart, receive map from dude next to counter (and save game) if that's the guy you're talking about. I had my pokewalker up to 14k steps & was still trying to get a pikachu with fly. Then midnight came & reset my steps.
