But wait, that would mean that you might be SRing for no reason at all, because it might be that the specific nature+inherited IV+ability combo you are SRing might never result in shiny regardless of the IVs, right?

You save before you actually pick up the egg. When the egg is generated by the game, it generates everything but the IVs. When you pick up the egg, it generates the IVs. Hatch, check IVs, SR if they suck.

Edit: If you're talking about shiny specifically, then you shouldn't be SRing. Something will never "change" to shiny when it hatches, if it isn't Shiny when the egg generates, it never will be.

That depends on how the shiny code is generated. If it takes into account the inherited IV's when doing it's "IV" part of adding to the code then yes given enough soft-reset's you are guaranteed to get a shiny at some point. If it does not take the inherited IV's into the equation then no you would not, but if you happen to get one that hatches shiny then you can then soft reset for better IV's at least if nothing else on it. It would suck to be the guinea pig though so that's why I'm asking these questions. Would hate to get a shiny, SR, and end up with a normal one when the info to know what would happen is already out there (I just have to find it again).

I think that address what you were asking. If you meant what if the combo of its ability+nature+gender could never result in shiny regardless of it's IV's then that isn't possible to my knowledge. Every combination has a shiny it's just which string will match up with the trainers SID to be shiny. What is shiny against my SID may not be against yours or someone elses. So really you could look at it as all PID's are not shiny, and only certain SIDs will make them be shiny.

Shiny status was tied to IVs in earlier games. The only way to force it nowadays is with RNG, you'll never SR into getting a shiny, and it'll never change off of being shiny from a SR. 3,000+ SRs with a Shiny Pichu and non-shiny Elekid in Diamond, neither one ever changed from Shiny to Non or vice versa.

Yeah, sorry got a little confusing again. :D
I thought you meant that the shiny factor would be calculated based on the IVs, which would mean that you could keep SRing a good natured Pokemon until you got it to hatch shiny. But yeah, only thing you can probably SR are the RNG'd IVs, and I'm not even so sure about that. But bottom line is, there probably is no good reason to SR eggs. >_>

I think you misunderstand what I mean. There is not one single stat/thing that shiny is connected to. What the game does is take the pokemons PID+Ability+IV's+Trainer SID+otherstufficantremember and formulates a number that looks like this and chops off the last 3 digits of each line:

    81238352|246
    16283588|923
    23802468|023

Now if you add the columns up (the left side columns), and the result is a string comprised solely of all even numbers then the pokemon ends up shiny.

Also, when you say you soft-reset 3000 times with a shiny pichu what exactly do you mean? You mean the old man was holding a shiny pichu egg and you saved before picking it up, and kept soft-resetting it for 3000 times?

I'm not saying shiny will change in this scenario. What I'm saying is regardless there is a positive benefit as listed in a few post up. Which one I do not know for certain, and don't think I'd want to risk one of my few shinies that show up to test it lol.

Nah, that's 100% something that can be SR'd, and provided you aren't using PokeSav or RNG manip for IVs, it's actually a really good way to save time on breeding. I've spent enough time with eggs that I can vouch for the fact that IVs re-generate every time you pick up the egg.

Soft-resetting an egg for better IV's is fact as I've done it myself just recently. There is no question if that works or not. You have to save BEFORE getting the egg from him, but while it is in his possession. SRing while you already have the egg in your inventory will do absolutely nothing. There is certainly a good reason to soft-reset to before picking the egg up though.

I was saying that either you could keep SRing and get a good natured shiny, or that if you got a shiny using the above method you could SR it and keep it being shiny and get better IV's. Either way is helpful honestly.

Oh, cool. Have to try it out when I start breeding my first team in HG. I used to just hatch everything in Pearl and check like 20-30 Pokemons IVs back to back.
One cool new feature in HG/SS is that you can now make the egg inherit a specific IV from a parent with a Power item, should make the process even more easier.

I think you've got the methods used in Gen II and Gen III and IV somehow combined and yet mixed up. Shiny status in Gen III and IV is determined by data present in the Trainer ID, Secret ID, and the Personality value of the pokemon. It's entirely unrelated to IVs.

The calculations ending up even is probably correct, but it doesn't factor IVs in anywhere anymore.

Yeah, but you would still end up with the same nature. That kinda sucks, but apparently Game Freak just really doesn't want us to have "perfect" shinys. Well, there is one way to get a good natured shiny, but even it is a bit unreliable; PokeRadar with a Pokemon with Synchronize ability as the first in party. But even that is 50% chance.

Missed this, but yes. He was holding a Shiny Pichu egg, which I then spent some number of days constantly SRing on to get an IV spread that resulted in Hidden Power Ice.

Shake it while watching tv. Alternate between hands and placing in sock and shaking legs. My arms are a little sore from the 14k steps I shook yesterday, such a work out.

That's right. I should have remember this since I've been doing it like crazy to help people lately, but yeah I guess only those three things are taken into account. In PID+IV Generator it only ask for TID+SID+Nature and generates a shiny PID based on that. Yay for stupidity and a bad memory! /facepalm
