But yeah, if there are enough people here interested in doing this, I'd be willing to organize this kinda event. I think we can all trust eachother enough so that we don't need to write down the teams (until after the competition, for fun), and if somebody gets a Pokemon with an egg move or from a wrong tier, they can just notify me and we'll replace it with a proper one. Winner would be rewarded with a shiny Pokemon to commemorate the event or something similar.
Honestly, if I had decent Wi-Fi, I'd be so in on this. It was fun stuff the first time, although there'd be a lot less random in this one.

You could have a moderator assign out teams with something like this.

    http://wyncorporation.com/pokemon/index.php

Though that wouldn't guarantee the 2 OU, 2 UU, 2 NU setup, it could still be pretty interesting.

Garchomp got banned because Smogon and other competitive battlers claimed it centralized the game too much. That is to say, every team had to include either a counter to Garchomp, or Garchomp itself.

What I've never understood with them is how Garchomp centralized the metagame, but somehow Stealth Rock isn't guilty of the same thing to an extreme.

As for sticking to purely Smogon tier sets, I agree with the other posts, fucking retarded. My team is a mixture of OU, UU and NU, and my wife uses a mixture of all three as well. I don't like playing by tiers, but you can't deny that getting stuck up against someone with a pokesav'd team of all OU/Ubers pretty much shits on anything that isn't a well designed OU team.

It all kind of goes back to the issue with stat distribution though. The things with shallow ass movepools should have the stats to compensate over those with wide movepools. Though I'm guilty of using it myself, Electivire is a perfect example of something that has stats that are above average paired with a huge movepool. Equip it with an expert belt as a mixed sweeper, and your best defense is to pray it can't hit you with something super effective.

And then to contrast, you have mountains of pokemon that are just absolutely useless statistically, and have almost single type movepools, even though they're third evolutions. Hidden Power is actually a good thing imho, it can easily move something from "useless" to "useable", though the time investment in getting the right HP with the right power with the best IVs possible is absolutely maddening.

tl;dr - Game isn't balanced well, never has been. Play it however you enjoy playing with other people.

Yeah, it's funny that the biggest tier is Never Used with 150 Pokemons. :D Well, there's the Not Fully Evolved tier with 220 but that's hardly worth counting as a tier.
And yeah, I agree about Stealth Rock, it was kinda what I was hinting when I wrote the bit about the game losing some of it's depth with overused combos and move sets. But I do disagree about the Hidden Power; it's a stupid move that's only use is to cover up flaws in move pools. I'm seriously NEVER gonna try to get a specific Hidden Power on a Pokemon ever again, it's just retarded.
And yeah, I know it's not balanced well, and I'm sure it's not even Game Freak's goal to balance the game to be fair competitively, but it still makes me sad that I'm pretty much forced to make my own rules in order to be able to compete fairly with other people. I don't know about you guys, but I don't really have fun playing against someone unless I know it's a fair game to both players, and that has nothing to do with winning or losing.

That's not a bad idea, but I was suggesting the "blind egg trade" mainly so I could actually participate in this as well. If I were to assign teams using that, I would have to enforce the teams (or have somebody else do it) so that nobody would "cheat" by having egg moves or by IV breeding. And even if I did assign everyone teams with that, and didn't participate myself, some people would get luckier and get something like Salamence in their team while others would get Beedrill. I mean, I can't just go "damn it, Salamence, Dragonite, Tyranitar, Metagross team again, have to roll again for this person". :D

Also, the blind egg trade would be fun, because then every participant would get to choose the Pokemons they would be going up against, which would most likely result in some uncommon choices, instead of the most used ones.

I agree to half an extent. Stealth Rock is pretty useful but it is much more mangible to deal with over Garchomp... competitively anyway. I was using it back in the day before it was so popular just to counter Focus Sash users like my friends loved doing :\ Isn't to say that it helps out with that LAST bit of damage you would've usually needed to begin with.

But if they did ban Stealth Rock then all the power to them. It'll just be replaced by Spike/Toxic Spike users...

At least they take multiple turns to setup (for full efficiency) and have much more limited uses. I'd like some sort of spikes that effects flying, but not one that's brokenly powerful against them specifically.

Yeah, it would require some moderator to make sure people don't either do multiple resets to get the team they want or just lie about what they rolled altogether. It's just a slightly easier but less balanced setup to do the randoms.

I like how garchomp centralized meta too much, but scizor doesn't, even though over 1/3rd of all competitive teams have a scizor and you HAVE to have a way to deal with him to get anywhere...

i really think they should just ban the most common pokemon and/or moves once in a while to shake up the metagame, rather than worrying about who goes in ubers, who's ou etc. just be like "use whoever you want except these pokemon", and update the list every month or so, with the most popular strats from the previous month banned.

there is some hope for nu/uu pokemon teams. there are some exceptions - porygon2 is NU but counters salamence, gyarados, magnezone, heatran, vaporeon, and a couple other common OUs for example. ive been playing with him and no one is ever ready for that shit lol. there's some other NUs that can be good competitive, like cacturne, espeon, electrode, and ursaring too.

i dont really think pokemon was meant to be balanced competitively, at least not at the start. pokemon like beedrill and butterfree are proof of that - good when you get them, but not as good statwise as later, harder to get pokemon. as long as there are pokemon that are only balanced by rarity or difficulty to level (like getting a level 25 larvitar, or a level 10 dratini and having to grind it up), there won't really be balance in the endgame. and since that's a pretty core part of the gameplay, i dont think it will change anytime soon.

Aren't roamers' shininess determined when you start the game? Although I'm not sure if Suicine would technically count as a roamer. But if it does, you are wasting your time.

Suicune isn't counted as a roamer in Heart Gold and Soul Silver. So you can soft reset infront of him.

You guys read about this yet? http://www.pokemonvgc.com/
I'm sure it's not news to everyone, but I just thought I'd post it since we were just talking about how the game isn't balanced for competitive play. The rules are pretty funny, you can use any items and the only Pokemons that are banned are Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin and Arceus.
There are restrictions, you can only use two of these in the same team:
    150 - Mewtwo
    249 - Lugia
    250 - Ho-Oh
    382 - Kyogre
    383 - Groudon
    384 - Rayquaza
    483 - Dialga
    484 - Palkia
    487 - Giratina
But you can still pick four (the tournament type is double battles, you will have a team of four, but you enter with six pokemon). This means that you can take, for example, Dialga, Palkia, Kyogre and Groundon, and then have the last two Pokemon be something like Garchomp and Scizor, but you can only use two of the ubers at a time.
There are no move restrictions, so yeah, it's gonna be filled with some bullshit tactics and everyone will have a Garchomp and a Garchomp counter. :D It's not even coming to my country, though I doubt I would even participate if it did. I have very shitty experiences from past tournaments (Gen I and Gen II).

grats I've hatched over 400 eggs, no luck so I got a little discouraged and stopped playing, then went on vacation. Guess I should get back to playing gold this week since I'm back home now.
