The matte finish on the FF7 AC PS3 is nice, not a fan of Piano black as shiny as it is, gets marks/fingerprints and smudges on it way too easily

The MGS4 80GB version looks pretty nice. Is it really worth it to have 4 usb ports over 2? I have an extra usb switch laying around, will that work with the ps3? For those of you who have the media slot, do you ever use it, and what for? Is the game engine any different in the older versions versus the newer versions? I still have a working ps2 but I don't play any games on it anymore so the backwards compatibility isn't as important to me. I'm just trying to verify that the 2 usb ports and media card slot is worth the extra money.

keep in mind, though the 80 gigs play almost all the games, its still emulation. My friend started playing persona 4 on his ps3 and there are glitches that made it not playable for him (ie: black bar while he's in tartarus) so he had to go out and buy one of those memory card transfer things so he could go back and play it on his ps2 now.

You should be able to use most USB hubs on your ps3 yeah. As far as the media card slot im not sure what you can do with it but theres probably some nifty things if you can do :D

Media Card slots basically act as USB drives in the PS3, it's just a removable media to copy stuff on/off of. Useless for the majority of us since games can't read stuff directly off of it, such as music and what not (to save on harddrive space for example).

Go down to retail configurations and it pretty much shows what the new PS3's have compared to the others.

Also, the newer PS3's in production use 65nm process on the cell compared to the 90nm process on the earlier versions of the PS3, and they will be using 45nm process in the future (if they haven't already started using it), all this does is lower manufacture costs and help the PS3 use less power to run efficiently.

Look, flash card readers and 2 more USB ports aren't that big of a difference to be honest, I only use 2 of my 4 USB slots right now, sometimes 3 if I want to use the PS3 keypad, I only have 1 charging a controller, and 1 plugged in to the PS3 headset. If I had a PS3 eye (which I wouldn't get because it's a piece of shit and Sony need to release Windows drivers for it) I'd have it in there too.

My advice is to not buy used though, warranty is important if you do plan on buying an earlier version of the PS3, the 80gb MGS bundle is the closest you'll get to the original launch version, paying over $900 for brand new launch version is disgusting. I play PS3 quite a lot, and have burned through 1 already (a 60GB launch version) I got the Yellow light of death and had to pay Sony $150 to replace it with a refurbished one because I was 6 months out of warranty. Luckily they have to replace with the version you send in so I got a like new 60GB (If it wasn't brand new, then it looked like it).

Also, new ones don't have SACD support, but again not a problem unless you really want it? lol

Looks like I am going to get that MGS4 version. A poster above mentioned that I not buy a used version, but the one amazon is selling for $500 is new right? I looked but couldn't find if it came with some kind of warranty either. Does anyone know if it does?

What do you guys think is the best place to buy a hard drive for it?

Do I have to start a whole new account with it or are my stats / trophies saved somewhere else and I can just log in with everything?

There is no way for me to transfer most my saved files from one hard drive to another is there?

Think 500GB is overkill?

I too was gonna say PSTRAY: 60 GB 4 life... a friend's PS3 just crapped. It can't read any blu rays. I'm sure it's a hardware issue. However, I'm reformatting the thing and will check one last time before I call for a casket and forkout the $150 bucks ;x

500gb is overkill if all you want to do is game on the system. If you plan on dumping music and videos onto the thing, or keep every single bloody demo you've downloaded, then sure.

Otherwise, on my side of things from just gaming, I've only got about 12gb of actual game stuff installed.
(7gb of it being optional, the rest being patch data)

Really depends on what you buy though, almost all Capcom PS3 games have a mandatory 3-5gb install for instance. (which is just bullshit. Loading times are not a problem with BluRay compared to DVD if you use the {shitload of} extra space to pad out and set out duplicates of media to make the BluRay reach the required data fasteR)

Accounts (and Firmware updates too I believe) are stored internally not on the main hard drive.

You can use the Back Up Utility in the PS3 menu, you need to have a storage device formatted in FAT32 that has enough space to hold it. Also, most save files can be transferred easily yes.

Yes, I wouldn't go higher than 250 personally.

Also I said this before, but you can delete game data/installs any time you like and it won't affect any of your save files, as long as you don't delete those. I usually delete game installs of games I no longer play/lost interest in.

I have several games that require 5gb installs and I have 200GB free in my 320 GB hard drive. I wouldn't say 500 is overkill if you plan on buying a lot of games. But if you want to save money 320 GB will get the job done and only cost around $60.

This is the truth and if you dont think it'll happen then you probably dont play your ps3 all that much :\. I've deleted many things I would have liked to keep on my 60gig. Re-installing something you already installed once is the worst thing ever, if you have the cash for a 500gig harddrive then do yourself a favor and get it and fill up the extra space with stuff like linux or FFXI or something lol
