Which PS3 should I buy?

Account & Trophies are stored server-side, but to get the trophies to reappear in your offline trophy list (unless they fixed this issue with the ability to force a Trophy Sync since last I checked) you have to run each individual game that you had trophies for at least once to get it to recache the icons and crap.

I brought a UK 80GB PS3 just after the discontinued the MGS4 bundles. Turns out, my 80GB model has full backwards compatability o_O;

Normal ones will work fine, just you won't have access to the extra benefits of v1.3 if your hardware supports it.

So everyone recommends the godly 60GB but .... isn't that the one that suffers from the Yellow Light of Death?

PS3 yellow light of death isn't as common as, say, 360's red ring of death. (Every single person I know that has a 360 has gotten a RRoD and had to send it in to get replaced/fixed.)

I have a hardware-backwards-compatible 60GB PS3 that's about 2.5 years old and have never had any problems with it. Only have run into one game so far that wasn't compatible (Star Ocean 3, which randomly freezes).

I totally understand but the fact remains that almost all cases of Yellow Light of Death come from those 60GB that you guys are recommending. If you think the risk of your system to be one of those "few" other than going for a safe 80GB ( I heard there has been no reports on the latest 80GB/160GB models)

You can google YLOD until your face turns blue but you will see that in most cases it happens on the 60GB/20GB (both were manufactured around the same time) and it tends to increase the frequency when people change the hard drive (which a lot of cases because everyone who gets a PS3 with less than 80GB will eventually need to increase their space.

I just thought I'd bring this up since I know for some people (myself included) is not worth paying for an overpriced 60GB that will need more space and will greatly increase your chance of fucking up your system.

If you care more about 1 extra USB port and the ability to play the old and bad looking games (that you should be sick and tired of playing anyways) then go for the 60GB and start praying the lord. Otherwise, go for the safe...

I got the YLOD on my 60gb and had to pay $150 to get a replacement unit as I was out of warranty. They sent me a new 60gb, and I've had a huge fan hitting since I got it just in case, as the older models of the PS3 use the 90nm process so use more power and generate more heat.

The thing is though, I play the shit out of my PS3, and the people it usually happens to also do the same, I know people who have gone through 2-3 PS3's from YLOD, I think it generally happens with very long play times under a lot of stress (more intensive games), but don't quote me on that.

I don't regret it though, our PS2 suffers from disc read errors so I do love my launch 60gb (now 250gb). The only thing I would recommend for people wanting to get one is to get an extended warranty.

But you are right, it is no where near as common as the RROD, but again, it is still cause for concern. I do think it happens to the older 80gb models (MGS bundle) also, if you search YLOD 80gb on Youtube there are hits for it. This is also most probably why these models are discontinued.
