Intel axes two of its Core i7 line CPUs..

TG Daily - Intel phasing out another Nehalem processor

Probably a cost-cutting move, especially since the 940 and 965 are nowhere NEAR as popular as the 920 and overclocking geeks can get their machines faster than the 965's baseline without breaking a sweat.

Also, this probably means they're getting ready to roll out the Core i5 line and prepping for a die reduction on the current crop of i7s.

Just heard there's also a rumor about a pair of replacement models - the 950 and Extreme 975. These could be the 32nm die-shrink models though.

Edit: damn dude you shelled out a grand for a 965? Playa playa..

I love my 920 to death. I'm sure I'll love it more when I pick up a Ultra Extreme 120.

Getting the Intel bundle deal in June, $289 for a 920, the DX58SO Intel board ($249 on newegg) and Vista Ultimate + 7 when it's released :D

The 940 is just a stupid place for a CPU. At more than twice the cost of the 920 it brings nothing more than a slightly (~10%) faster stock clock. They were fairly popular with OEMs though... for whatever reason.

    Intel(R) Retail Edge Program

You have to hold a job in retail sales where you are able to sell Intel products to get the deals. You can make an account and do the training and whatnot without having a retail job, you just can't redeem anything.

    I built 2 computers this way, but now that Circuit City is gone I can not redeem ; ;

The Intel bundles were always so good.

This made working there nice as our discount was a joke, this and the Sony XBR6 46" I got for $900 bucks new shipped to my door in October 2008 when they were $2300 +

Fucking Sony axed their EEP deals because some cunts on SlickDeals decided they deserved employee pricing even though they were regular customers...

Mine's been chugging along happily at 3.6 for nearly 2 years, with nary a complaint. Could push a good bit higher, and I might at some point (but I've also been say that for 2 years as well...).

I kind of want to upgrade, but I've got no compelling reason to... the newer chips are better but not omgwtfbbq better for a gaming rig.

man you're not kidding, i used to work there too, but only as a customer service guy. the only time i had a really good discount was the liquidation sell. i bought the 55 in plasma samsung 1080p for 240 bucks and than sold it on ebay for a k. but it sucks i had to wait allllll that time to get a good sale lol. our store was very shady. we went through a new store manager almost every month.

there getting phased out cuase the 920 is just as good as a 965 sadly

Both can run 3.2GHz like nothing. Both can run 4GHz like nothing and anything past 4GHz is just a lucky good chip weather its a 920 940 or 965 so might as well save the cash get a 920 try it out for a while if you dont like it resell it on ebay and use the 700$+ u saved to pay the difference get a 920 from a different batch and try your luck agen getting past 4GHz if thats what you wanna do but dont think just cuase its a 965 your garenteed a 4GHz+ overclock

i got a 920 running 4GHz on air friend got a 965 cant get it past 4.2GHZ water cooling it(he started out with same TRUE black i have couldent get past 4GHz so he spends somthing like 300$ on WC set up anf only got 200MHz more lol)

920 at 4GHz alrdy super fuckin fast havent even felt the need to try my luck higher then that

if anyone is looking to buy and put off by the fact that there alrdy chopping down the line to just 1 processor go ahead and get a 920 you will love it trust me!!!

Intel isn't cutting an Extreme Edition without adding another, it's just what they do.
