This is why I hate DoFP. They spend the whole movie trying to stop Mystique from killing someone and setting off the grimdark future and then at the end Magneto decides he's just gonna do that shit anyways. He fucking had control of the Sentinels, if he just has THEM kill Dinklage and Nixon while he stays out of sight he gets what he wants without any blame placed on mutants. There was no reason for him dropping that stadium and delivering that speech aside from someone thought it would be cool.

The Sentinels were a completely untested technology based on the vision of one man that up until that point had not been taken seriously. The technology going catastrophically wrong is a perfectly plausible explanation and far more believable than some unproven mutant plot, especially since Magneto(if he were written to act like a person and not a cartoon supervillain) could've just had the sentinels self-destruct immediately afterwards, preventing a thorough investigation.
