DoFP takes place in 1973, so the Vietnam war would've been over. Which means everything before the Origin timeskip still should have happened, i.e. that proto-Deadpool exists. Incidentally, this would make Wade Wilson 60+ years old during Deadpool.

Which is still a less hand-wavey dismissal of time passing than most comic book characters.
See? I gladly accept this argument as more plausible explanation as to why Deadpool has no ties to Origins. Still, as you said, in comic book universe, time skips, time lines and any sort of chronological progressions are used or discarded at the writer's whim. According to Miller, by all intents and purposes, Deadpool is in his own bubble universe. Yet it pulls reference from other movies because of how self aware it is, simply because Deadpool is that kind of character.

One thing that sort of threw me off, was the time passing between the procedure and the incident on the highway. By that time, Deadpool is on X-Men's radar and Colossus has previously approached him with offer to join the team. So it must have been a year at least, right?

At least a year, yeah - after Morena Baccarin smacks the shit out of Deadpool at the end, she yells at him for letting her think he's been dead for two years.

He also said in the cab ride that he'd been waiting a year for this when looking at his adventure time watch.

Fuck I just lost it right now realizing this. I was entertained at seeing it pop up all of a sudden, but didn't have the time to realize that pun.

This movie needs to be watched way more than 3 times to be able to grasp all the references. So great, want to go watch again with someone else who actually enjoyed it instead.

Also, I expect Marvel Comics to bring Negasonic Teenage Warhead back from death with the powers from this movie. Calling it now.

Need to see it again asap. Was hilarious.

I saw the marketing working in person. We had friends coming with us ranging from people who had no idea who Deadpool was to a girl coming who hated superhero movies. By the end she said she finally had a favorite superhero.

$260m for the weekend. Highest ever for a Rated R film. It's box office rival, 2oolander, took in $15.7m.

From my understanding, I only follow the movies, Deadpool tied them up pretty well by including X-Men and a Shield Helicarrier. Someone else mentioned it earlier I believe. It just sucks there can't be more crossing between the different franchises due to stupid intellectual rights ownership shit between studios.

It's not a hellicarrier according to Miller. Just something that looks like one.

Can they legally call it a Helicarrier?

"The film has a self-deprecating tone that’s riotous. It’s never been done before. It’s poking fun at Marvel. That label takes itself so seriously, can you imagine them making fun of themselves in a movie? They’d rather stab themselves."

That's a quote from Deadline Hollywood, attributing it to a Hollywood "suit." I love Deadline and get a lot of my film business news from them. And I love Deadpool even more - the film is hilariously funny, has lots of heart, and is exactly what we need right now, taking true risks in spectacle film - but COME THE FUCK ON. That's no reason to rewrite history. This quote has to have been said by the dumbest fucking Hollywood exec in the history of dumb fucking Hollywood execs.

Let's ignore Guardians for a moment, a movie that survives from moment to moment building itself up and cutting itself down - God knows I'm biased about that one. But what do you think Favreau and Downey did in Iron Man? What the fuck was Ant-Man??!

    Come on, Deadline.

After every movie smashes records people here in Hollywood love to throw out the definitive reasons why the movie was a hit. I saw it happen with Guardians. It "wasn't afraid to be fun" or it "was colorful and funny" etc etc etc. And next thing I know I
hear of a hundred film projects being set up "like Guardians," and I start seeing dozens of trailers exactly like the Guardians trailer with a big pop song and a bunch of quips. Ugh.

    Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

Deadpool wasn't that. Deadpool was its own thing. THAT'S what people are reacting to. It's original, it's damn good, it was made with love by the filmmakers, and it wasn't afraid to take risks.

For the theatrical experience to survive, spectacle films need to expand their definition of what they can be. They need to be unique and true voices of the filmmakers behind them. They can't just be copying what came before them.
So, over the next few months, if you pay attention to the trades, you'll see Hollywood misunderstanding the lesson they should be learning with Deadpool. They'll be green lighting films "like Deadpool" - but, by that, they won't mean "good and original" but "a raunchy superhero film" or "it breaks the fourth wall." They'll treat you like you're stupid, which is the one thing Deadpool didn't do.

But hopefully in the midst of all this there will be a studio or two that will take the right lesson from this - like Fox did with Guardians by green-lighting Deadpool - and say - "Boy, maybe we can give them something they don't already have."

And that's who is going to succeed.

    Have a great day.

All respect to James Gunn, but he's wrong in that last paragraph. Fox didn't learn shit from Guardians. They greenlit Deadpool because people fucking demanded it after the test footage "leaked."

Agreed. Deadpool didn't come from risk-taking movies like Ant-Man and Guardians. It was all pure fan-service.

I mean I wouldn't find it hard to believe that while the execs were meeting to greenlight the film some suit was like "plus everyone thought that Guardians of the Galaxy movie was gonna suck and its awesome!". It was still in theaters when the test footage leaked so its unexpected success would have been fresh in their minds. Still seems like Gunn is giving himself a little too much credit here tho.

"Good and original," didn't Gunn write Dawn of the Dead? The movie was great, but Gunn is talking out of his asshole.
