There's a difference between "fun" and "something really cheap to pass the time" though.![]()
I just find it sad that this is the picture of "Christians" to the public at large. It's like the whole terrorism in Islam thing...
Prom, while expensive (tux, limo, dinner, hotel, booze), is a cheap experience because its no different than any other formal school dance. And even those formal dances are no different than the regular casual dances with the exception of attire. So, its just a hyped up cheap experience that isn't special in any way.
The idea of what is fun, is subjective. Sure. However, I have to ask myself why someone would find prom fun compared to activities that I would declare more exciting, memorable, and stimulating? The answer I find is that they have a limited experience of what is fun (aka don't know of anything better yet, or believe that prom is some sort of once in a life time event that should be cherrished (lmao)), or they have an immature view of what is fun (for ex., "Lets binge drink and attempt to have sex! Woooo!") I think prom as life time memorably event could fall in the immature view as well.
The hilarious thing about ad hominem is that it clearly points out who's posting for Epeen+1 rather then actual substance. Irony and all.
I bow to your infallible logic. People who value some activities as being fun/memorable only do so because they haven't been explosed to what you think is fun. You are the ultimate coinesseur of fun. Go forth, transcendential fun appreciator, and enlighten the masses that their activities are meaningless and dull and that they know nothing of real fun! Take them under your ousted homosexual wing and show them what they have been missing out on since they were not obligatorily disassociated with the common man and their insipid school dances. Hesitate not on your false assumptions and overgeneralizations of binge drinking and dicks of wiskey! You are the judge of all that is memorable and the great arbiter of stimulants!Prom, while expensive (tux, limo, dinner, hotel, booze), is a cheap experience because its no different than any other formal school dance. It's more of a personal theory behind your skewed viewpoint on the "norm" (which should be obvious as to why I think that) but my point stands with or without it.
Going to dances with girls, the average society (especially highschool!) not supporting homosexuality, your constant generalizations and assumptions on these activities, all while not being able to see past your own nose with such contempt towards an example of juvenile heterosexual tradition.
Either way, I'm dropping it as of now because you're getting defensive about one word out of the entire thing and disregarding the sarcasm as your way of putting your head in the sand about being completely ignorant about the entire topic at hand.
on a personal level, I think prom was one of the funnest things I've experienced in my life.
in regards to the story. I think it's retarded that the school is threatening him.... although if he did sign a contract or whatever that binds him inside school grounds and outside then he's kinda shit outta luck. Hopefully this will deter him and his parents from wanting to further pursue that type of lifestyle though so it's kind of a win situation, in that sense. I also think it's funny how some people who didn't even go to prom or don't/didn't have an interest in prom and saying that it's stupid and there are funner things to do. The kid wants to go so piss off. The thread is about GOING TO PROM(or I guess not being able to go to prom?) so... consistency would be nice
My high school supported my sexuality. I wasn't hassled and I had many friends. I was welcomed to social events and was not alienated in any form.
Generalizations are what they are. They're not made up lies. Most proms are like how I generalize them to be. At least, the proms at my high school are as I generalized them. Furthermore, I believe MTV did a TrueLife episode on proms and they were also depicted as how I generalized them to be. I don't think I am assuming anything nor do I think I am incorrect that the majority of proms are like this.
Juvenile heterosexual tradition is juvenile. Just because its a tradition doesn't mean it has inherent value. Maybe at one point in time prom had value. This was probably forever ago when a high school diploma was enough education for most and before bachelor degrees became requirements for just about everything.
You like prom and think it has value. I have the opposite view point.
GG us.
Edit:
As to the main topic. Take the bitch to prom, get trashed, have sex, enjoy your early graduation and move on with your life.
I never liked school dances, but I can't imagine my personal opinion on them being any kind of ultimate truth. These activities are lifelong memories for a lot of people, nostalgia most likely, and who is anyone to negate this? Preventative or after the fact, it's ridiculous.
This school disallowing this kid (18 years old?) to attend an event, outside the boundaries of his own campus no less, that is so standard, so traditional, so looked forward to by so many young people is absurd. If he didn't give a shit and didn't want to go he doesn't have to, and he damn well has every reason not to, just to save himself the trouble of fighting with superiors about graduating with incompletes.
However, as much as hindsight shows me, personally, that they were so trivial in the scope of the 27 years of experience of living on this planet, promenades and graduation ceremonies/night were fun for the time being and it's completely fucked to unjustly remove that priveledge, no matter how "boring" and "immature" it is versus illegally clubbing downtown to some. I hated dances but I'll never forget my prom or my graduation or my friends related to those experiences.
We are in a society that holds these experiences as par for the course (almost a modern cultural coming-of-age thing) and anyone who is trying to restrict it over some absurd religious assumptions about "rock music" is fucking insane. He should be going to his girlfriend's prom for whatever reasons he wants to go, just to bone her, just to get wasted, just to dance and have good-natured fun... who knows. I would simply go out of spite of a psychotic faculty.
(wasn't trying to offend your sexuality, it just seemed like too easily a reason for your discontent with highschool dances, as I could imagine it would be for many others in similar situations)
This is officially the nerdiest fucking thread in the history of BG.
Thinking the same. Maybe you should go visit the Tech section Plow.
"tech" is not nerdy
the obsessions with cartoons intended for 4 year olds... meh, to each their own
"I didn't have a hot chick to get all dressed up quite possibly as nice as she ever will in her life to go out to dinner and a dance in a limo with me or an after party to go to wah wah wah prom is teh suxorz rite gusy?!" is as nerdy as it gets.
Give just about anyone a three minute time limit and they can find a nerdier thread, I guarantee it.
ok maybe I'm exaggerating, but the whole "I couldn't get a date to prom and didn't have friends that would be interesting to go with so prom sux" attitude just seems to define nerdiness to me
I didn't go to prom because my boyfriend at the time was long distance and a complete douchebag so he probably would have thrown a shit fit. Also, I was a pansy-ass little bitch so I actually cared to obey.![]()
I think what you're getting at is how it's terribly silly and lame to sit there and deride what others think is fun in some sort of attempt to sound cultured, experienced and mature. In fact it makes you sound immature and bitchy. People don't like folks that are continually trying to one-up everyone.
