On topic: Servers are guaranteed federal minimum wage, *all* employees are, no exceptions. What it is, is that servers are paid less per hour but their tips count towards the minimum wage number, if a server does not receive enough tips to meet minimum wage for hours work, their employer must pay the difference(and they're screwing you if they don't).

Well I tip, I tend to tip a modest 10%, and have higher standards for what receives no tip(and I don't even feel slightly bad, do a better job). I've heard so many "boohoo I'm a server I make below minimum wage and rely on your tips to live" stories I wanna throw up every-time, you are guaranteed minimum wage, deal with it.

I also refuse to tip anyone who directly gets paid minimum or above, otherwise it's just completely illogical about why you tip some jobs and not others.

I decided regarding fast/deli/takeout/pickup places: that if there's no service (e.g. waiting on me and making my experience nice outside of taking down what I want) there will be no tip involved, especially tipping before I receive my food, fuck that. I have only tipped in such places after I had become a regular and/or the employees were excessively nice/helpful even though they are just taking orders. Also, as soon as someone remembers what you like to order, bam. Tip.

Anywhere else: If they are on top of their shit and overhear/notice you wanting something and bring it before you call him/her out on it, TIP. If they bring you free/extra shit, TIP.

People that work in take-out or counter help situations generally make full wages, so it's perfectly acceptable to not tip them. Even places like Chili's that have a dedicated take-out service but also have servers, the take-out people are making a lot more than servers in wages.

Tip for great service and nothing less, the rewards end up far outweighing the monetary compensation. Reduced prices on drinks, food, best table etc etc. Tip well and always at regular joints. Know the names of the servers, hosts / hostesses, bartenders, barbacks, busboys etc. 1-200$ up front can save you 500$+ in the long run.

a tipping side note... outbacks stopped gratuitizing parties of 8 or more. which means that today when a coworker had a party of 8 with a check of 230bucks and they tipped her 5 on it, she had to tip out 3% which means she had to pay 2$ to serve that table for 2 hours....fucking hoosier ass bitches.

Tipping $5.00 for a group of 8 together is such a dick thing to do. My belief is if you can't afford to give a decent tip on a dinner out, eat at home. The only time I ever give bad tips is if the service to me is absolutely horrendous. I try to tip at least 20% of my bill when I eat out with friends, and we always make sure to leave an amount that was fair to the server in comparison to our service.

Worst tip at a restaurant was a buck when I only saw the waitress to take my drink and food order at the same time (she took 10 minutes to get to my table, and insisted on getting both at the same time), bringing both my food and drink at the same time, slamming them down in front of us, and when she brought us the check. It was at a Denny's and the funny part about it was place had a total of 5 tables with people at them, and we were nothing but polite to the waitress when she greeted us.

lol, she had the only open big top to seat them at, our hostesses only do that to the really bad servers, the girl that got screwed is the nicest person ever. she later got 50 on 120 so it all balances out, it just sucks to know that you paid to wait on people for that long.
