If I remember right there actually IS a 'cilantro gene' that makes it really taste like soap to some people. I am glad I am not one of those people.

I have an amazing idea though. A fried grouper (or nice flaky fish) taco with some sour cream, chipotle peppers, cilantro, and .... bacon. It'd be amazing. Hell, I may do this tomorrow at work.

I think I am going to one up myself by adding huge chunks of avocado to it and a squirt of lime juice....oh dear god this sounds like a stroke of genius.

Sounds like a fish taco. Made with grouper. Destined for failure.

Despite my having eaten none too long ago, browsing those cilantro photos made me crave good Mexican food desperately. One of my favorite things about going to pick up food is raiding their salsa bar of much of its cilantro. Fuck yes.

I usually skim your posts due to lack of patience and fear of common sense, but I actually read this one in its entirety, and I must say, I agree, cilantro is pure fucking win.

What is all the confusion with coriander, cilantro=coriander. its not another part of the plant...

Ginger, Spring Onion and Coriander in a pot with half a kg of mussels, add some white wine to steam and voila, one the nicest and simplest things to make! Esp on a hot day.

I thought that Cilantro was some kind of company that made nice salads or something, coming into this thread. The fact that I had to use wikipedia just to find out that you've done English wrong again just reinforces the fact that America sucks.

Hey, at least we didn't mangle the word "coriander" and use the result of that.

Cilantro is spanish for Coriander. Here is the etymology:

[Spanish, alteration of Late Latin coliandrum, from Latin coriandrum; see coriander.]

    Here is Coriander's etymology:

[Middle English coriandre, from Old French, from Latin coriandrum, from Greek koriandron.]

So, there you have it. Both are correct. It isn't uncommon in America for Spanish words to replace known English words. This is an example of such. Mexican cooking has only become popular in the last twenty years, and people who wanted to cook Mexican began importing the leaves of the Coriander plant from Mexico. So, of course they used the Spanish word for the leaves as they wanted their food to sound authentically Mexican (see fine dining where ingredients are listed out on menu.) As Mexican food became more and more popular, the word Cilantro replaced the word Coriander in America. This also explains why the seeds are still referred to as Coriander, as they were not commonly used in baking in Mexico. It kept its traditional name.

    Edit:

To go back to an earlier post on page 1.

The whole plant is called Coriander (Coriandrum sativum). The leaves are known as Cilantro (in the Americas.) The seeds are known as Coriander (in the Americas.) The leaves are used for cooking. The seeds are used for baking.

    Edit 2:

It is also known as "Chinese Parsley".

When Spain was still colonizing the Americas, it was sending commerce from the Americas back to Europe, and they had to stop in ports in South Eastern Asia. Here, the Cilantro was traded and found its way into Asian cooking. This is why you can find Mexican food sections in Asian grocery stores, no other country, just Mexico.

Here, this link really explains everything there is to know about this fucking plant. Note: its etymology section actually kind of sucks. The rest of it provides good information.
