Actually I use it as a way of tracking down old friends from school, previous jobs etc. so I can get back in touch.

I've used it to track down people before also. I don't find anything creepy about it at all, although you could use it for things like that. <_<

Employers do this all the time. They will also look your name up on facebook, myspace, and linkedin, so alot of people are wry about stuff they put up.

Remember my facebook thread? Where I posted a "script" (image) where it will show your facebook pic if you have been logged onto Facebook recently, but infact I cannot see everyone's faces, only one can see themselves.

This raged a lot of people. Some guy was even clever enough to leave his real name behind and asked me to take it off, which came under scrutiny of us when we googled his name and found his god-awful website and pics of his wife (which we would like to fuck).

I found another guys with the same name as me by doing this. We actually communicate occasionally.
He actually sent me a gift this year because he broke up with his girlfriend and wanted to offload a present she gave him, but it had his/my name on it and figured I'd be the only one to appreciate it.

Exactly, everyone that we interview gets screened via Google and other search engines to see what you can dig up. I have seen things from being accused of battery, domestic violence as well as theft changes that went away via charges being dropped or by paying restitution. Funny thing is we have a long time programmer here at my branch that had a Prostitution arrest back in 2001. We give him endless amounts of shit for "lovin' dem hoes", we always by have someone dress up as prostitutes for Halloween and buy him blowup dolls for Christmas parties.

The only thing you have to be sure of is to make sure you are fucking proficient in your Googling skills or you will make yourself look like a total fucking dumb fuck. I had someone try this on me when I declined to join his shitty linkshell, the dumb fuck Googled my name entirely wrong and got a hold of my old College roommate's id and harassed him. It was quite amusing being a white boy for a week.
