Drug companies make more money by alleviating symptoms. Did you guys know that most of Europe has laws about how much drug companies can charge for medications? I used to use the birth control patch. 3 patches = one month's supply. Here without insurance it's upwards of $65.00 a month. When I lived in Italy, I could buy that shit for 8 Euros.

And clearly they're not losing enough money by selling it for 8 Euros to stop actually selling it there -- Europe just doesn't allow them to make a 500% profit off you. It's pretty sickening what our country allows drug companies to pull.

Japan operates a universal insurance system (single-payer I believe, it's all through the gov't?) and has price controls for treatments/meds/services. They also seem keen on preventative care; a popular statistic is that Japan has more MRI machines than the US.

Price controls seems like a fantastic way to make healthcare affordable while still having a market for it; South Korea does this as well (along with having a gov't insurance plan to use) and healthcare is pretty damn cheap here. Delivering a baby is 700 bucks as opposed to the several thousand back home; LASEK is about 1000 bucks. Dental is cheap- getting wisdoms out is 40 bucks.

And the ghetto comment may not have been best communicated, but usually clinics/hospitals in economically deficient areas usually have more patients, less workers, less care.
