I was very seriously considering buying this today. I'm glad that I didn't and I checked here. I tend to trust Kyo's assessment just based on the fact that he and I seem to have the same tastes in games. And womenz.

This game is dated and it shows. Isometric view was popular when 3d wasn't as efficient but now it's just lazy. CoN and BG:DA were great games but that was last gen.

Is it at least worth a rental to try it?

Usually I would say yes but there are a tonne of great Diablo-esqe games out there that are free- for example, Dungeon Runners. The difference between CoN/BGDA and Sacred 2 is that those games were made with consoles in mind; This is taking a bug ridden PC game, then poorly porting it over to consoles, increasing the amount of bugs then shoveling it out the door.

I've been playing this since it came out on the PC. My friend and I oftentimes play together when we get bored of FFXI. One of the great things about this game is there is online and offline mode. Offline mode you can just do the regular story and do quests etc. Online mode you have the choice of creating your own server (password protected) or joining one that's already been made. There is the option of Free mode where there are no quests and you can go and repeatedly kill optional bosses in the game for gear.

One thing I like about the game is how the mobs adjust themselves to your level and how long you go without dying which is the Survival Bonus. The longer you go without dying, the higher your survival bonus, and it determines the type of mobs you encounter (Champion mobs). So the higher your SB, the more challenging the mobs are that you encounter. This also improves droprates for rare gear.

One of the more awesome features of the game is the inventory chest (I forget the name). Lets say you created a character in online mode and did single player and got a bunch of gear drops that aren't for your race. You can store it in a chest, and when you create a different character to play, you have access to the same chest and can equip the gear (If its the correct race, level, etc)

The game does take some getting used to, and you might have to give it a 2nd or 3rd look to really understand the different controls and how combos work and how to spend points to put into skills.

It's so wonderfully hack-'n-slash, it's a nice release after a long day of dealing with stupid employees.

My husband and I have been playing this on the PS3, and we're really enjoying it. The game does have flaws, but 2 player off-line co-op RPGs are so few and far between that we're pretty forgiving. I believe I have 30 hours of playtime on my character (level 31 Shadow Warrior with his Temple Guardian, shadow campaign on silver mode), and we've only uncovered 15% of the map.

I enjoy the humor in the quest dialogs, as well as the random comments from NPCs. We laugh at how "normal" the voices are for the kobold/goblin types. And the quests are so repellant that I can't help but laugh - "go kill the witnesses", "capture some women for us - we need more babies". I'm thinking the light campaign might be a bit different.

We have our unique mounts, and they're quite handy to have, much moreso than the horses you can buy.

My boss bought the PC version after I babbled about how much fun we were having on the PS3 version, and he's been complaining a lot about the interface. He can't figure out how to do things that were really very easy on the console version. "Oh, I just hit down on the d-pad for that" would be a typical response from me. So I do think they kind of screwed up on the UI for the PC.

I don't like the camera view, but noticed it's slightly better in single player mode than dual. One of the combos I have on the R2 pallette rarely seems to work, and it ends up firing off the skill I have on that button on the main pallette instead. The "combat attributes" menus are a bit unforgiving when you just start out and aren't sure what you're doing. I gave my dude riding skill when I was just trying to read about it. And you can't back it out.

After we complete the story on these characters, we are planning to do a light campaign, but in an effort to pick up more trophies, we're going to just do the mission line, trying to complete with less than 20% of the map uncovered and buying nothing from merchants, on gold mode.

I've missed playing video games with my husband since he quit FFXI 2.5 years ago (waiting oh-so patiently for me to be "done"), so this has been great for us - when I'm not off in Vana'diel.
