If you're resting, you use dark/pluto's. If you're standing between casts and resting isn't viable because you need to support heal, you idle in Terra's. The point of an idle set is gear that's beneficial when not casting, a few basics that carry between mage jobs are:
Herald's Gaiters/Hermes Sandals/Crimson Cuisses - biggest piece of idle gear, period.. if you have access to them, idle in them
Earth/Terra's Staff - physical aoes, aggro, whatever, it's a big difference if you default to that versus leaving whatever you were using on
Cheviot Cape - same deal, hexerei is a much cheaper alternative on most servers
Refresh Body/any other refresh/regen gear - self explanatory, vermillion cloak is only 600k if you don't have yinyang/dalm/morrigan's/whatever, balrahns if applicable, orochi nodowa if you don't mind spending the gil. Garden bangles are okay too, but I'm not a fan of them as they have 0 mp and take up an inventory slot for only .5 regen.
Goliard Trews - Nice chunk of mp, bit of phys dmg
Loquac. Earring - Not worth macroing in precast because the delay negates the fast cast, but if you idle in it you get that minor benefit as well as the most mp on an earring
A few more advanced pieces that aren't really necessary but help if you have access to them:
Jelly/Merman's rings depending on situation - Would not recommend idling in jelly by default as most severe damage mages take is magical
Lieutenant's Sash
MP and HP gear in other slots, though going overboard isn't necessary if your gear macros for spells will just cut your max anyway next time you cast
This is all very basic and no longer elitism. Most good mages you see nowadays will have something like this on when running around, a year ago it might have seemed silly but now it's the standard.
