The flu of 1918 killed about 5% of those that it infected.. Total deaths were about 50 million people.

Swine flu is worse. If shit gets out of hand, it'll be far worse than this. Not to mention travel and control is much harder now with flights around the world.

Also I am less concerned about a couple of Mexicans dying from the flu when over 30,000 people a year die from the flu. With adequate health care and sanitation this is not an issue.

It still is an issue because not everywhere (even in the usa) have access to or practice proper sanitation habits. And again, 30,000 is nothing compared to 50-100 million people.

The swine flu has the potential to fuck up a lot of peoples day. The media has done scare mongering in the past (IE: SARS, etc.) but this one has a very very high chance of getting way out of control as it has already spread throughout several countries.

Here's about the closest thing we can have to a summary that predicts the pandemic potential of this version of swine flu.

Main points?

CFR is ~0.4%, not anywhere near the 1918 pandemic
Transmission rate is also not even close to 50%, not even in the same ballpark.
The closest comparison thus far is to the 1957 pandemic
There is limited data on possible mutation rate and generation time
We need to watch the southern hemisphere carefully as they're just entering flu season
Expect big differences in fatalities due to discrepancies in health care.
This is worse than seasonal flu, but thus far nothing to panic over.
The mode of transmission could be odd, patients report more vomiting/diarrhea than in seasonal flu, therefore poorer countries with sanitation problems could pose greater challenges (wash your hands people!)

I agree that I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but I figure they do.

edit: Another thing we have are antivirals and flu vaccines, which weren't around in the most severe historical pandemics. If you're terrified of swine flu, convince your lawmakers to drop the 1.5 billion (estimated) needed for development of the vaccine specific for this flu. Personally, I think it's worth having a vaccine, even if it isn't useful (Britain seems to feel the same way, they just ordered GSK to make 90mill of the vaccines).
